Rute Isabel Talhadas Cesário

I completed my PhD in Environmental Engineering on 2017 by the Instituto Superior Técnico-University of Lisbon (IST-UL). I have a position in Centro de Química Estrutural (CQE)-IST-UL as a doctorate researcher since January 2019 to develop my research work in the area of Mercury Biogeochemistry in aquatic environments. Presently I have a FCT young researcher contract (2021.03267.CEECIND) with CQE-IST to investigate Hg sources and transformations in estuaries using stable Hg isotopes techniques. I also am an Invited Assistant Professor of DEQ-IST since 2021/2022, lecturing Lab classes of QA, AMAA, MIA and QBA. I published 22 articles in reputable international peer-reviewed journals, 65% belong to the 1st quartile (Scimago 2023), of which 13 (~65%) were published in the last 8 years, 60% as 1st author. I am also author of a book and co-author of two book chapters in a volume dedicated to coastal and marine pollution. Since my PhD my published papers have an accumulated impact factor (IF) of 116.4 (JCR 2023), which is considered excellent compared to the average IFs for environmental sciences or environmental chemistry journals. I have been cited more than 760 times (766-GScholar) with an h-index of 14 (Scopus and ISI Web of Science). I have been disseminated my research work in more than 45 international/national events, with >75 communications and also have actively participated in the organization of scientific events (ASSW 2021; XV CPCP 2023). Concurrently, I have been actively engaged in collaborating with institutional programmes for scientific dissemination and outreach to a broader audience. I received 3 international awards to participate in recognized scientific meetings (SETAC North America, ICOBTE Switzerland and SIQUIMAR Spain). I have been providing tutorial support to undergraduate students and supervising PhD and MSc students. I supervise(d) 12 MSc, 1 PhD, 7 summer internship and 2 project degree report students in the area of Hg environmental biogeochemistry in aquatic ecosystems. Recently I have been extended my research to extreme environments, mainly in Polar regions (Canadian Arctic and Antarctica). I participated in 3 research campaigns since 2022, two in the Arctic and one in Antarctica, all to develop research in Hg biogeochemistry. I am member of the College on Polar and Extreme Environments of the University of Lisbon (POLAR2E) and have been developing research work in both polar regions, contributing to the mission of POLAR2. I have been involved in several competitive national/international projects (e.g., FCT, PROPOLAR, IASC, EU COST Actions) and presently I actively participate in 6 PROPOLAR projects, in 3 as a PI and 1 POLAR2E, also as a PI. In fact, one of these projects was developed under the scope of the COASTANTAR expedition 2024 (https://coastantar.wordpress.com). Within my professional activities I have been interacted with more than 80 scientists worldwide and my recognition as a Hg expert resulted in international collaborations with IDAEA and CIEMAT (Spain), Trieste U (Italy), and ECCC, Acadia U and Trent U (Canada). I collaborated with an international and cross-disciplinary scholarly journal of scientific studies related to atmospheric mercury in wetlands, participating on the topic board as a guest editor. I was member of the Scientific Committee of the ECAS 2021 and the XV CPCP 2023; was co-chair of the session: Coastal Ecosystems are Critical Areas for the Assessment of Pollutant Exposure, in the SETAC Europe 2023 and I am member of the Reviewer Board of Land, Microorganisms and of the Editorial Board of Frontiers SCI journals. I also am External Project Evaluator for the National Science Centre (NCN) of the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Poland, since 2021 and I am expert evaluator for the EIC Pathfinder of the EIC Work Programme, since 2024. 2025/01/11 - 2025/02/13	Participation in the 38th Spanish Antarctic Research Campaign, which began at the end of December 2024 and will end in March 2025, which is coordinated by the Ministry's Spanish Polar Committee and involves participation from around 300 people, including scientists, technical and logistical support staff. This participation was in the scope of two research projects, first Thawimpact project which gave the logistical support through PROPOLAR, and the second one, Mercantar which was financed by the POLAR2E.
