Curriculum Vitae
Delfim Duarte
Delfim Duarte is a physician-scientist interested in understanding ecological interactions between malignant and non-malignant
cells and their surrounding microenvironments. He has a particular interest in bone marrow (BM) niches, normal and malignant
hematopoiesis, vascular biology and intravital microscopy. Delfim obtained his MD at the Faculty of Medicine, University of
Porto (FMUP). He has previously previously performed research in the fields of angiogenesis, inflammation and cell microparticles.
In 2014, he moved to Cristina Lo Celso's lab (Imperial College London; GABBA program) where he studied the interaction between
acute leukemic cells and BM niches. He reported that T-ALL is niche-agnostic and extremely motile and investigated the disruption
of HSC-supporting niches in AML. In 2017, he was part of the European Hematology Association (EHA)-American Society Hematology
(ASH) TRTH program. His research program is funded by several national and international projects. He was named Young Hematologist
of the Year in 2019 and was awarded the National Hematology Prize in 2021, by the Portuguese Society of Hematology. He graduated
from the residency/fellowship in Clinical Hematology in October 2023. He has published several papers, including first-author
and senior publications in Nature, Cell Stem Cell, Blood, Blood Advances and Leukemia. Since 2024, he is a Hematologist specialist
at the Department of Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation of IPO-Porto. Since 2021, he is a Group Leader (Hematopoiesis
& Microenvironments Group) at i3s.
