Maurizio Zambaldi is a geoarchaeologist. His scientific expertise is soil and sediment micromorphology in the context of Archaeology, Quaternary Geomorphology and Paleoenvironmental studies. His research follows a broad geoarchaeological approach to study the relationship between humans and their environment and investigate the formation processes of archaeological deposits, anthropogenic evidence in the landscape, past environments, and paleoclimates, especially during Prehistory and in the Mediterranean region. He is currently working as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Trento under the PRIN 2022 project – “PyroTransitions: prehistoric cultural changes in the use of fire from foraging to the earliest farming societies”. Additionally, he is a collaborator at the UNIARQ (Centre for Archaeology of the University of Lisbon). He earned an international master's degree in Quaternary and Prehistory (IMQP) from the Universities of Ferrara (Italy) and Tarragona (Spain), and a PhD in Geoarchaeology from the University of Trento (Italy) in 2020. He has been a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Coimbra (FLUC) – CLIMATE@COA project – “Climate and human adaptation during the Last Glacial Period in the Côa Valley region (Portugal)” (COA/CAC/0031/2019); and at University of Lisbon (Portugal) – PALEORESCUE project – “Upper Paleolithic and Preventive Archaeology in Portugal: challenges and opportunities” (PTDC/HAR-ARQ/30779/2017). He has also worked as a freelance consultant geoarchaeologist for UNIARQ (Lisbon, Portugal), Institut für Archäologien (Innsbruck, Austria), Archeosmart S.r.l. (Ferrara, Italy), and as a field archaeologist for national commercial companies. He has taught theory and methods of (geo-)archaeological research and geomorphology in workshops and seminars to undergraduates, doctoral students, and professional archaeologists. He has been co-supervisor of 4 master theses in geoarchaeology. He has co-organized the Geoarchaeology session (#22) at the International Congress of Geomorphology (ICG 2022) in Coimbra. His research has been part of funded national and international projects. He has contributed to 3 peer-reviewed international publications indexed in the JCR (with IF) – Geoarchaeology, Quaternary International, and The Science of Nature. He has also produced over 25 scientific outputs presented as talks/posters at national and international conferences and published in journals referring to the domains of Archaeology and Earth and Planetary Sciences. He is an invited peer reviewer for PlosONE and Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports.
