Carla Sofia Garcia Fernandes is a researcher at the Research Center CIIMAR and assistant professor of Organic and Medicinal Chemistry of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto. She obtained her degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Porto in 2002; Master in Quality Control - Scientific Area in Drug Substances and Medicinal Plants, from the same University in 2006; and PhD in Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry from the same University in 2012. Current research interests include design of chiral compounds with potential biological activity, development of synthetic methodologies for obtaining bioactive chiral compounds, studies of enantioselectivity and structure-activity relationship, synthesis of chiral stationary phases, analytical and preparative enantiomeric separation of diverse racemic mixtures by liquid chromatography and membranes, studies of chiral recognition mechanisms. Participates and/or participated as Researcher in 19 projects. She is author/co-author of 2 books, 4 book chapters, 64 papers in international scientific periodicals with referees (h-index 24), 15 abstracts in conference proceedings, 1 application note and several oral, poster and electronic communications. Has 1 patent registered. She supervised/co-supervised 2 PhD student, 13 master students as well as 28 undergraduate students. She is currently supervising/co-supervising 3 PhD students, 5 master students and 3 undergraduate student. Participated in various activities of scientific dissemination and has been a member of organizing and scientific committees of national courses. From September 2018, she is Member of the Scientific Committee of the Master Degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Porto. Organized 17 events. Has received 4 awards and/or honors.
