PhD student in Biotechnology and Biosciences at the Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB), Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). His research involves developing drug delivery vehicles for targeted cancer therapy based on extracellular vesicles derived from mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC-EVs) and creating an optimized platform for the mass production of these EVs. He graduated with the bachelor of Biological Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in 2020 and continued his studies in the master of Biomedical Engineering at IST, which he concluded in 2022. During his studies, he developed a particular interest in mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) and their broad spectrum of therapeutic applications. This interest led him to discover the promising features of MSC-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs). As such he explored these topics during his master's thesis where a drug delivery system based on MSC-derived EVs for targeted cancer therapy was developed. During this project, he developed skills in mammalian cell culture, EV isolation methodologies such as tangential flow filtration and chromatographic methods, and multiple techniques for the characterization of EVs such as nanoparticle tracking analysis. It was also an opportunity to develop personal competencies such as dedication, perseverance, and organization. Additionally, he also holds a broad interest in the employment of synthetic nanoparticles for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. He already deepened his knowledge in this area by performing the functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles with aptamers or oligonucleotides to detect SARS-CoV-2 in biofluids such as saliva and urine.
