My scientific path began with a Bachelor in Biochemistry (FCUP, Porto, 2003) and an ERASMUS training at Wageninen University (The Netherlands). In 2004, I started my Breast cancer (BC) Oncobiology training in the most renowned cancer research institute in Portugal (IPATIMUP), completing a Master in Molecular Oncology (2006), and a PhD in Biomedicine (FMUP, Porto, 2011), with the supervision of Fernando Schmitt (one of the world's best BC pathologist experts) and Joana Paredes (an internationally recognized researcher on BC invasion and metastasis). I was top ranked in a highly competitive post-doc grant (7/151 applicants) to unravel the molecular mechanisms behind the impact of P-cadherin on BC cell invasion and metastases. I acquired EXTENSIVE TRAINING in EXTERNAL RENOWNED INSTITUTIONS, namely in Uppsala University (SWEDEN, 2010) and at IMM (Lisbon, 2014). This was crucial for the acquisition of new scientific knowledge and new front-line methodologies that were further implemented at IPATIMUP/i3s, resulting in 3 peer-reviewed publications. I also collaborated with more than 30 national/international research groups, significantly contributing to 15 multidisciplinary collaborative papers, reflecting my scientific and technical expertise in BC. From 2011 to 2016, I had 3 maternity leaves to support the first 6 months of my babies’ growth. Although this has slowed down my lab work, it gave me the opportunity to strengthen my mentoring, writing and leadership capacity. Therefore, in 2017, I established a novel RESEARCH LINE in the group, focused on secreted prognostic biomarkers for metastatic BC, since it is the main cause of BC related-death. I have been particularly focused on BC brain metastasis and, in this context, I have developed a novel in vivo tool to study cancer stem cells and defined a brain BC stem cell signature that significantly predicts a worse prognosis for BC patients. I have also been developing 2D and 3D in vitro assays, ex-vivo organotypic cultures and several in vivo tools (e.g. chicken choriallantoic and mice) to overcome the lack of metastasis experimental models. Of relevance, my data has been crucial to attract funding in competitive calls for several projects where I have been involved in the coordination and supervision as PI, co-PI and task leader to advance on cancer metastasis, totaling >500K€, as well as for 5 projects (>3M€) where I integrate as a team member. Recently, I was awarded with two Innovation prizes for the development of a novel clinical tool to screen for metastatic predictive biomarkers that had mediatic projection with TV and journal interviews. Currently, I am an Assistant Researcher with a strong track record in BC. I am the most senior member of the team from the recently formed Cancer Metastasis group at i3S (2021), led by the young group leader Joana Paredes. My publication list includes 38 peer-reviewed papers (5 first and 1 last author) in Q1 journals (Oncogene, Hum Mol Gen, Lancet Oncol, Sem Can Biol, Nanoscale, J Pathol) and 4 book chapters, with a cumulative IF of 244.98, >1350 citations and h-index 21. My work has been awarded and selected for oral presentations at important international conferences and institutional seminars. I also lecture under the framework of Master and PhD programs, participate in thesis committees, and review for respected journals, also reflecting the recognition of my work by research fellows. I have mentored more than 17 students and participated in the hiring of new team members of the Cancer Metastasis group. I am also highly involved in several activities at i3S, namely as postdoc seminar organizer, science Ambassador within the i3S Educational program and member of the ORBEA (Animal Welfare and Ethics Body). Of note, I partner with patient advocates networks to ensure that my research integrates cancer patients’ perspective and that my findings are communicated back to the community. I am an active member of cancer societies in joined
