Nuno José Gomes Rama graduated in Medicine in 1999 (Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra - UC). He obtained a specialist degree in General Surgery in 2008 (19.2 points) and a master’s degree in health management and economics in 2014 from the Faculty of Economics of the UC. In May 2013, he was the first Portuguese to be certified by the European Board of Surgery -Division of Coloproctology - UEMS, in Mallorca. He completed three Fellowships in minimally invasive Surgery (MIS): 2006 - São Paulo - Brazil (Miguel Pedroso, MD); 2008-9 - Centro Hospitalar do Porto (Anabela Rocha, MD); 2015 – Marques de Valdecilla University Hospital (HUMV) - Santander (Marcos Gomez, MD, PhD) - Robotic Surgery. Since 2014, he has been an Assistant Professor at the School of Health Sciences (Leiria), teaching a master’s Programme in Medical-Surgical Nursing – Area of Critical Care. Since 2010, he has dedicated to Colorectal Minimally Invasive Surgery, leading the Colorectal Division, since 2015 and the Reference Centre for Rectal Cancer since 2017. In this context, he has developed technical and scientific expertise in dealing with patients with colon cancer (he has performed more than 600 colectomies) and rectal cancer (Anterior Resection / Low AR / Abdominoperineal resection - more than 400 procedures). He regularly coordinated MDT meetings, implemented, and developing the "Watch and Wait" approach in rectal cancer management. He has also developed technical skills in the transanal approach, with specific international training (at HUMV with Prof Marcos Gomez - 2015, and Amsterdam in 2018 -"TATME Course”). He developed technical skills in functional disorders management, mainly in rectal prolapse, rectocele, colonic inertia/megacolon. Regularly performs MIS procedures, such as ventral rectopexy, resection-rectopexy (Frykman-Golberg operation), STARR and perineal approaches (Délorme or Altemeier operations). He also has significant experience in the surgical treatment of anal incontinence (sphincteroplasty and application of bulking agents). He joined ciTechCare in 2019 as a collaborating member / Joint Steering Committee. He is a member of 8 Scientific Societies, being the General-Secretary of the Portuguese Society of Surgery (since 2020) and Portuguese Society Coloproctology (since 2022) and ESCP´s National Representative (2017-2020 and 2023-2026). He published several papers in peer-reviewed journals, eleven as first author, made several oral communications, posters, and lectures. Moreover, organised and organized various events. He received 9 awards and participated as a researcher in six projects, being the lead researcher in four. In 2022 got the PhD degree in Medical Sciences with the Thesis: “Usefulness of serum biomarkers in the early detection of colorectal anastomotic dehiscence”.
