MANUEL ALBERTO CREGO BARREIRO

My academic career has been developed at the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain). My research activity has been focused on the study (by mean of the event-related potentials technique) of brain activity associated with different cognitive processes (attention, working memory, inhibitory control, etc.) in college students with a pattern of alcohol consumption "binge drinking". In addition, epidemiological and neuropsychological data analysis in college students with this pattern of alcohol consumption (binge drinking) have also been part of my research activity during my PhD, which I finished in June 2012 obtaining the PhD extraordinary award of this year by School of Psychology of the University of Santiago de Compostela. During my initial post-doc stage in the Psychological Neuroscience Lab (PLN) in the Psychology Research Cente¿¿r (CIPsi) of the University of Minho (from March 2013), my main area of interest was the study of the neurocognitive consequences of alcohol binge drinking in college students, assessed by electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during the execution of different cognitive task (e.g., working memory and inhibitory control tasks). During this time, I have been training in the use (data recording and analysis) of the neuroimaging (namely MRI, DTI and fMRI) and neurobiochemical techniques. Particularly, with respect to the simultaneous EEG and fMRI recording and data analysis, I did a stay in Brazil for 2014, in the Radiology Institute (InRAD) of the Medicine school of University of Sao Paulo (FMUSP), and I have attended an intensive workshop of Brain Products in Madrid in the summer of 2015 in order to learn in detail the nature of this type of multimodal data recording and analysis. However, after my early doctoral and post-doctoral stage, in which I focused on getting to know the neural correlates of BD in young people, the next steps or challenges in my career are (1) the search for neural vulnerability markers for BD, which might help in the identification of adolescents at risk of engaging in BD alcohol consumption patterns and, therefore, of great utility to conduct prevention actions; and (2) the development of an intervention protocol (based in cognitive training and neurostimulation) in order to improve impaired cognitive functions in young BDs.
