Ana Isabel Barbosa obtained her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 2016, at Loughborough University in the UK. During her Ph.D. she developed an affordable miniaturized point of care (POC) diagnostic device, for sensitive quantitation of protein biomarkers, combining aspects of biomaterial science, analytical chemistry with micro-engineering and biology. In 2015 she started to work as a research engineer in Capillary Film Technology Ltd, UK, enrolling in technology product development role for a novel diagnostic prototype for AMI. For 2 years she worked in the upscaling of test strips, prototype design, and development of cardiac biomarkers tests. In 2017 she joined the 3Bs research group (University of Minho) as a post-doctoral fellow, to work with natural polymers pursuing the production of biosensing platforms for protein, lactate, pH, and oxygen biosensors in several projects. In 2020 she was awarded an IC&DT project by FCT (MyµMAT) as Principal Investigator to develop a POC microfluidic device with integrated 3D micro-engineered materials for AMI early detection. MyµMAT gathers the fields of microfluidics, diagnostics, and biomaterials which are Ana's research interests, that she pursues in order to produce affordable diagnostics accessible to all. Ana has participated in many international research projects either in academic and industry environments, naming for example Wageningen (Netherlands) and Cambridge Universities (UK), and Fraunhofer Institute (Germany), and Eg Technology Ltd in Cambridge (UK). She was also responsible for the co-supervision of several MSc and BCs students and for teaching an experimental module in Bioanalytical Methods at Loughborough University. Moreover, she has presented her work in international academic and industry meetings and conferences and has received 9 awards and/or honors. Overall, Ana has published over 20 indexed publications, 18 peer-reviewed papers in the area of microfluidics and POC diagnostics, from which she the first author of 10. Plus 5 papers in international conference proceedings in highly recognized lab-on-chip conferences such as µTAS (Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences). She also published 3 book chapters and presents in February 2023, 574 citations since 2018, h-index 11 and i10-index 12.
