I am a senior researcher and the coordinator of the CHAIN biobank at the NMS-UNL. I hold a Bachelor of Engineering in Biomedical Materials Science & Engineering and a Ph.D. in Biomaterials from Queen Mary University of London (sponsored by Johnson&Johnson, UK), where I investigated alternative radiopacity for orthopaedic cements during total hip replacement surgeries. I was awarded a prestigious Marie Curie fellowship to conduct research on cemented hip arthroplasty at the Orthopaedics department of Lund University Hospital (Sweden), where I worked within a multidisciplinary team of orthopaedic surgeons, biomaterials scientists and biologists. During this period, I supervised and co-supervised master¿s and Ph.D. students, collaborated with orthopaedic companies in Scandinavia and academic partners at Aarhus University (Denmark) on joint research projects, all of which yielded high-quality publications in peer-reviewed international journals. Post Marie Curie, I focused my research on the optimization of biomaterials for vertebroplasty (Bupa funding) at the Centre for Orthopaedic Biomechanics, University of Bath, UK. Then moved to Lisbon and worked at the Rheumatology research unit at Instituto de Medicina Molecular where I investigated the nanostructural properties of osteoporotic bone in a mouse model, winning the prestigious European Calcified Tissue Society award. This research project marked the beginning of my independent research path as a PI. Currently, I´m the coordinator of the CHAIN Biobank at NOVA Medical School, UNL, responsible for its implementation and functioning and an integrated researcher at CHRC, NMS, UNL.
