Ivo E. Sampaio-Dias (https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9071-6197) is an Invited Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) and an Integrated Ph.D. researcher at REQUIMTE (since 2021) in the framework of the 3rd Individual CEEC - Scientific Employment Stimulus by FCT (DOI: 10.54499/2020.02311.CEECIND/CP1596/CT0004) performing independent research as a Project Leader in ORCHIDS@REQUIMTE (https://www.fc.up.pt/orchids/projlead.html) on Melanostatin (MIF-1) neuropeptide as a strategy to tackle Parkinson's disease (PD). Ivo Dias received his Ph.D. in Sustainable Chemistry (October 2018) from Porto, Aveiro, and Nova de Lisboa Universities after completing his M.Sc. (2013) and B.Sc. (2011) in Biochemistry. His multidisciplinary training includes certification as an independent researcher in tissues and cell culture by the Portuguese Institute of Oncology (2017). During 2018-2020, IESD integrated an FCT-funded research project (ref: PTDC/BIA-MIB/29059/2017) entitled "SilaSeco: Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Sila-Secosteroids" as a post-doc researcher, combining docking, organic synthesis, and biological evaluation of vitamin D derivatives with antineoplastic activity, being co-inventor of a PCT patent (ref. PCT/IB2022/052839) "Sila-Analogues of Vitamin D Compounds, Method of Producing Said Compounds and Uses Thereof". In 2024, IESD secured a competitive research grant funded by the FCT entitled "Melanostatin Peptide-Peptoid Hybrids: A Tailored Pharmacological Strategy to Tackle Parkinson’s Disease", being currently the PI of another FCT-funded project "DynaPro: Probing Dynamic Chirality to the Rescue of Melanostatin in Parkinson's Therapy" (DOI: 10.54499/2022.01175.PTDC), with the establishment of relevant partnerships at both national (Laboratory of Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto) and international institutions (Center for Research in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Materials and BioFarma research group at USC, and IKERBASQUE at the University of the Basque Country), to carry pharmacological, biological, and computational experiments. Since 2013, IESD has published 23 research papers in journals of high impact factors, 14 of which as the corresponding author, including Green Chemistry, Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, ACS Chemical Neuroscience, and Organic Chemistry Frontiers. Furthermore, IESD has participated in several national and international scientific events presenting 30 oral communications (including an invited keynote) and 57 posters, 6 of them distinguished (4 in the field of MIF-1 research). IESD received the IACOBUS Research Papers Award (2024) and the IACOBUS Patents Award (2022), which reward research excellence in transborder cooperation between Galicia and North Portugal. IESD has supervised a total of 55 students: 4 Ph.D. (Sustainable Chemistry), 8 M.Sc. (Biochemistry/Pharmaceutical Chemistry), 15 B.Sc. (Chemistry/Biochemistry), and 28 undergraduate students. IESD has also participated as a member of academic degrees of 21 students (including 3 Ph.D. and 9 M.Sc.). Previous teaching activities include positions as an Assistant (2017-2019) and Adjunct Professor (2019-2020) at the Health School of the Institute Polytechnic of Porto and as a tutor of the Synthesis of Pharmaceuticals course included in the Master's degrees in Chemistry (Q4024) and Biochemistry (Q4114) at FCUP (2021-2023). In 2018, IESD was awarded a grant from the European Peptide Society to attend the 35th European Peptide Symposium (35EPS) in Dublin, Ireland. In 2023, IESD was appointed Associate Editorial Board Member of Current Medicinal Chemistry (Bentham Science). Main research topics: i) development of new methodologies in peptide chemistry; ii) synthesis and pharmacological characterization of allosteric modulators targeting GPCRs with applications in Medicinal Chemistry.
