Zélia Silva obtained her PhD in Biochemistry from Universidade de Coimbra in 2006 and currently works as a researcher at Universidade Nova de Lisboa at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia. Her research is mainly devoted studying the interplay between immune cells and diseases, particularly regarding the role played by glycans. Her research themes span immune modulation, anti-cancer immunotherapy, dendritic cells, antigen-presentation, cancer prognostics and biomarkers, new therapeutic antibodies, and new therapeutic drugs for CDG or Cancer. She supervised 13 master students and monitored 7 PhD theses ((2 as supervisor (ongoing) and 5 as mentor) and trained several others from different levels, from undergraduates to PhDs. She also teaches Immunology to first-degree students and Glycobiology to postgraduates. She has engaged in several national and international research projects and published with over 100 different collaborators. She authored 24 peer-reviewed articles, 4 book chapters, 1 book, and a patent, which were cited 600 times (h index= 16), according to the Web of Science. Among her notable achievements is the elucidation of the relevance of sialic acid content to Dendritic Cells’ immunogenicity against tumour cells ((*Silva et al., Oncotarget (2016)), which resulted in a granted patent (WO2017002045). Additionally, she has original findings regarding the role of sialic acid to MHC-I molecules’ stability at the cell surface and the modulation of MHC-I-TCR synapse ((*Silva et al., Seminars in immunology (2024);*Silva et al.,Pharmaceutics, (2020); Luz and Silva et al., JOVE (2023) and further characterization of the potential of sialic acid modulation for tailored production of DC-based vaccines (*Silva et al. Cancer Immunology, Immunotherapy (2024). She has participated in 9 financed projects (one as co-PI) (last 5 years), including DCMATTERS- DC-vaccines in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors as first-line therapy in patients with solid malignant neoplasms (Researcher and Project manager, PT2020, completed in June 2023); ProDGNE-Novel therapeutic approaches to target GNE myopathy ((EJPRD), co-PI)); InnoGlyco-Innovative approaches in pancreatic cancer: decoding and manipulating the immune response to sialylated-O -glycans (FCT, 2023-2026) and GLYCOTwinning Building NETworks to excel in Glycoscience, ref: 101079417 (HORIZON-WIDERA-2022-2025). Her main contribution to society is her commitment to fostering innovation and valorization of scientific findings by actively engaging with partners of biotech companies and clinicians to translate our expertise and technology.
