Joana Santana is a researcher at BIOPOLIS-CIBIO/InBIO. She received her PhD degree in Biology in 2017 at the University of Porto, her MSc degree in Natural Resources Management in 2009 at the Technical Univ. of Lisbon, and her BSc degree in Biology in 2004 at the Univ. of Lisbon. She has published 34 scientific peer-reviewed articles in SCI journals; 7 preprints; 1 policy brief; 1 book chapter; and 13 species accounts in 2 ornithological books accumulating >1392 citations, H-index = 18 (Google Scholar). She (co)authors 3 papers under review in SCI journals. J. Santana (co)supervised 1 PhD, supervised 1 MSc; 3 BSc students, 2 interships, and research fellows. She was the jury examiner of 2 PhD theses, 1 MSc thesis, and 1 BSc project. She is editor of Birds (MDPI) and conducted 25 reviews for 15 SCI journals. In her professional activities J. Santana interacted with a network of renowned researchers of international and multidisciplinary teams. She participated in 2 European projects, 15 international and national research projects, and 9 consulting projects. J. Santana research is focused on unravelling long-term changes in the composition of animal communities, and identifying indicators and drivers of such changes (e.g. changes in land use and management, policy contexts, climate) with the aim of providing practical and effective guidelines for biodiversity conservation in concert with human activities. Among the research projects, she leads EuropaBON (https://europabon.org/) task 3.2. Identifying gaps and important new areas for monitoring in Europe. She also coordinates a mountain bird monitoring program in the Peneda-Gerês National Park, Portugal since 2021. Her ambition is to develop research in biodiversity monitoring and community changes on remote mountain regions, as these have important knowledge gaps due to a lack of long-term monitoring data at high spatial resolution. This knowledge would support better management of biodiversity, namely by allowing the definition of harmonised indicators of community change in mountain regions across Europe, and the use of mountains as early warning systems of global change. Under an EC funded project (farmland@Birds) she was involved in the development of 20 bird conservation schemes in 10 EU-MS to be considered in their CAP Strategic Plans. She also undertakes research on biological invasions under UNRAVEL and ALIENTRADE FCT projects aiming at identifying the key drivers and patterns of invasion success along the invasion pathways and the prospective ecological impacts of invasive species under scenarios of change. She has a strong knowledge and experience in GIS using ArcGIS, and ecological modelling using R software, including GAM, GLM, GLMM, HMSC, and SDM. J. Santana has a good knowledge of the vertebrate fauna of Portugal, particularly birds. She has also experience in tropical forest Amazon vertebrates with a focus on birds and bats. During her PhD and 1st postdoc, she explored the community-level effects of land-use changes, landscape heterogeneity and composition, farming systems specialization, olive farming intensification, and habitat fragmentation on farmland biodiversity. The outputs of this research were her PhD thesis, 14 articles and 11 oral communications. Previous research focused on the effects of human management on the biodiversity of mountain cork oak forests, using birds, butterflies and plants as indicators. The outputs were her MSc thesis, 3 articles, and 2 oral presentations in international and national meetings. She has also investigated the ecology of avian and bat communities in the Amazonian tropical rainforest aiming at provide guidelines for the establishment of tropical protected areas. This included 3 articles and 2 posters in international meetings. Finally, she produced research on day and night shorebirds feeding ecology, including diet and prey behaviour research published in her BSc thesis, and 3 posters and 1 oral presentation.
