Ana Teresa Simões scientific path has been devoted to Neuroscience exploring calpain-mediated proteolysis in Machado Joseph Disease (MJD/SCA3), attempting to establish its potential as a biomarker and therapeutic target. This scientific challenge started with her PharmD graduation in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2007, by the Faculty of Pharmacy (FFUC, Coimbra, Portugal), and went on beyond her PhD in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology by FFUC in 2012, followed by a six-year postdoctoral training at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (Coimbra, PT), funded by FCT (PT), where she established a new pathogenic mechanism in MJD/SCA3 based on the formation of toxic fragments of ataxin-3 related to calcium dysregulation. Her main goal was to develop a successful therapeutic strategy for MJD using three different approaches: pharmacological, gene therapy, and genome editing. During this period, she graduated in Medicine (Faculty of Medicine, UC, 2018) and moved on to clinical practice at the Coimbra Hospital and Universitary Center (CHUC, Coimbra, 2019/---), now gathering unique skills combining clinical to basic to translational research. She has a h-index of 7, resulting from 7 co-authored publications in high impact peer-reviewed journals and 1 book chapter, cited over 205 times (WoS), and 4 publications in Conference Proceedings. She has also co-authored 24 oral communications and 19 poster presentations in national and international scientific meetings. Her academic and scientific performances were distinguished by the Lusitana Pharmaceutical Society award (2007), the Portuguese Soc for Neuroscience (2 best papers, 2013-2014), and the National Ataxia Foundation (NAF, travel stipend to attend the 5th Ataxia Investigators Meeting in Las Vegas, US – 2014), and was selected for oral communications in the most relevant conferences in the area, such as the Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience (US, 2009), and the Ataxia Research Conference (UK, 2015). Ana Teresa Simões participated in 16 national and international R&D projects, funded by FCT (PT), NAF (US) and AFM (FR) and succeeded as an independent researcher, attested by the NAF award (15'000 USD) and funds from the Blade Therapeutics to study calpain-mediated proteolysis in MJD. She was invited to give 10 lectures in graduate and postgraduate courses (2010-2019) and also gave practical classes to Pharmaceutical Sciences Master’s degree, supervised 2 Master students (2013/15, 2017/18) and provided scientific guidance for up to 7 PhD, MSc and under-graduated students (2009-2017), and also participated as jury arguer of a PhD thesis (2017). Additionally, she regularly participates in BAW, Science and Technology Week and Open Lab Days promoting scientific knowledge and practices.
