Curriculum Vitae
Rosa María Morcuende Morcuende
Rosa Morcuende graduated in Pharmacy at the University of Salamanca. She started her scientific career at the Institute of
Natural Resources and Agrobiology of Salamanca (IRNASA-CSIC) as a Predoctoral Fellow funded by the Ministry of Education and
Science. She obtained her PhD degree in Pharmacy from the University of Salamanca in 1994 for her research entitled “Photosynthesis
and carbon metabolism in plants: aspects of their regulation by metabolic sinks”. From 1994-1997, she worked as a Postdoctoral
Fellow funded by the European Commission (current Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship) in the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Stitt
at the Botanic Institute of the University of Heidelberg (Germany). Her research was focused on regulation of plant metabolism
and growth by carbon and nutrients. In 1997, she returned to Spain and joined, as Postdoctoral researcher of the Ministry
of Education and Science, the Photosynthesis group at IRNASA-CSIC. Her main research objectives were to investigate the impact
of climate change on grain yield and quality of cereals grown under near field conditions, using temperature gradient chambers.
Between 2000 and 2003, as a Postdoctoral I3P researcher she was studying the regulation of fructan biosynthesis by nutrients.
She found that the mechanism involved in the decline of fructan biosynthesis by nitrate and phosphate is different, while
nitrate is a negative signal for fructosyltransferases gene expression, phosphate inhibits sucrose phosphate synthase activity,
decreasing the level of sucrose, the substrate for fructan biosynthesis. In 2003, she became a researcher from the Ramón and
Cajal National Science Programme, and in 2006 she got a permanent position as Tenured Scientist from the Spanish National
Research Council. In 2017, she was appointed as Research Scientist. She is interested in a better understanding the regulation
mechanisms involved in the adaptation response of cereals and other plant species to different environmental conditions, mainly
those related to climate change such as elevated CO2 and high temperature, as well as water shortage and nutrient deficiencies.
To reach this goal, she is using integrated approaches that combine physiological traits with metabolite, transcript and enzyme
activity profiles to characterize the mechanisms underlying the regulation of primary metabolism. This activity has allowed
i) the development of a pioneering qRT-PCR platform for the expression analysis of more than a hundred primary carbon and
nitrogen metabolism related genes in an important agro-food crop as wheat, and ii) the optimisation of methods to measure
maximum catalytic activity of twenty representative enzymes from central C-N metabolism not only in wheat leaves, but also
in roots using the HiT-Me facility at INRA-Aquitaine and Bordeaux University in the framework of the project OPTENZWHEAT.
In 2019, she became Vicedirector for Research of the IRNASA. She is also currently leading the Consolidated Research Unit
of Castilla y León UIC044 and the Photosynthesis Group recognized by CSIC. She is also a guarantor member of the recognition
that IRNASA-CSIC received in 2020 as a Structure of Excellence Ref. CLU-2019-05 by Junta de Castilla y León for the year period
2021-2024. She participates in different scientific networks such as FiRCMe and AGROFOR (PTI 27). She maintains active collaborations
with other scientists from national (CIALE, ITACyL, University of Barcelona) and international institutions as the Max Planck
Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology and the RWTH Aachen University (Germany), INRA-Bordeaux Aquitaine (France), Catholic
University of Porto and ITQBNova (Portugal), and Talca University (Chile). She has been involved in the Agriculture Scientific
Committee of the Agency of Evaluation and Accreditation of Andalusian (2016-2021) where she has actively participated in the
evaluation of different programmes.
