Diogo Prino Godinho is an ecologist and evolutionary biologist whose work focuses on the study of biotic interactions and how they are affected by the environment. He developed his Master’s thesis on the competition between crop pests at the University of Amsterdam in 2013, under the supervision of Arne Janssen and Sara Magalhães. In 2015 he secured a research grant within the “Adapt for Change” programme funded by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) to restore grasslands in semi-arid areas. Diogo obtained his PhD degree in September 2020 at the University of Lisbon with a thesis on the distribution and performance of crop pests in heterogeneous environments, supervised by Sara Magalhães and Cristina Branquinho. He also participated in two mobility projects (PESSOA and PRIXTREMPLIN) addressing the genetic and environmental drivers of virulence and transmission of plant macro-parasites, which in 2018 and 2019 funded stays at the University of Montpellier, where he collaborated with Alison Duncan. Diogo was also a postdoctoral researcher in a European Research Council (ERC) grant focusing on the evolution of biotic interactions in heterogeneous environments (COMPCON). He is currently participating in another ERC grant aimed at elucidating how the evolution of biotic interactions affects tri-trophic systems (DYNAMICTRIO) and in 2 national projects funded by the FCT, HOTPEST and CLIMAX, which address the effects of climate change and pesticide use on crop pest adaptation to new hosts. He is co-PI of the CLIMAX project. Diogo is presently a postdoc researcher in the Plant Molecular Lab at Institute Gulbenkian de Ciência, working on the response of Arabidopsis to metal and pathogen stress. Diogo’s work has contributed with significant advances to his research field, namely by showing that: i) different species of herbivorous spider mites suppress plant defences, ii) interspecific competition affects the distribution and performance of herbivores within a plant, iii) herbivores present an hormetic response to metal hyperaccumulation in plants, iv) intraspecific competition modulates the relationship between virulence and transmission in a plant macro-parasite, and v) adaptation of herbivorous arthropods to hyperaccumulating plants does not occur within 55 generations of evolution in that environment. Diogo P. Godinho is a member of the European Society for Evolutionary Biology, the European Ecological Federation and the Portuguese Societies for Ecology and for Evolutionary Biology. He has attended a total of 25 scientific conferences, where he delivered 14 oral communications (5 at international meetings) and presented 11 posters (2 international). Diogo has served as a reviewer for 8 international journals and is engaged in different teaching activities at the University of Lisbon, lecturing in courses for undergraduate and graduate students and volunteering at numerous outreach activities. He has also mentored the internship of two bachelor students and co-supervised a Master’s thesis at the University of Lisbon. Overall, Diogo P. Godinho has participated in 7 national and international research projects and his work has resulted in 12 scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals, 9 of which as first author.
