Henrique Zilhão is a PhD student working in polar environments with a work plan entitled: "Contaminants in the Antarctic Peninsula and the impacts of permafrost thaw". His interested in the study of pollutants, especially mercury (Hg), saltmarshes, polar environments, permafrost, and climate change. During his academic studies, he spent one semester abroad, where he studied at Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires (ITBA); back in Portugal, he completed his master's in chemical engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in January of 2021 with a master thesis related to Environmental Biogeochemistry: "Methylation of mercury and demethylation of monomethylmercury in saltmarshes - seasonal variation and plant effect". The master thesis was part of the interdisciplinary project Planta II (PTDC/CTA-GQU/31208/2017), funded by FCT. Prior of pursuing his PhD project he remained investigating the role of saltmarsh plants in the biogeochemical cycle of Hg at CQE, IST-UL, and was an invited researcher at Trent University (Canada) within the scope of Planta II project. He is currently devoted to investigating biogecochemical cycles of trace metals in permafrost areas of the South Shetland Islands. He already participated in three polar field campaigns by joining the PROPOLAR Antarctic Campaigns in 2022, 2023 and 2024 and he is a student member of POLAR2E and PYRN.
