Joana Vilas Boas completed the BSc in Biological Engineering and, in 2011, the MSc in Environmental Technology at Minho University (Braga, Portugal). She gained valuable experience through a six-month research internship at Wetsus, European Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technology located in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. The internship allowed her to work alongside leading researchers of sustainable water technology and gain hands-on experience in conducting cutting-edge research. In 2014, she was granted funding for the project titled “vermiSOLVE” (project number 1382) by the “Agência para a Competitividade e Inovação, I.P. (IAPMEI, I.P.)” as part of the “Programa Operacional da Região do Norte”. The project aimed to develop and manufacture natural and specialized fertilizers for agricultural crops, offering enhanced profitability and attractiveness compared to existing market products. The vermiSOLVE project was recognized for its innovation and impact, winning the NUT Cávado award at the “Minho Empreende” ideas competition. In 2014, she started a research fellowship at the Transport Phenomena Research Center (CEFT) within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto (FEUP) where she has been actively researching and contributing to the field of microbial fuel cells (MFC) ever since. In 2022, she obtained her Ph.D. in Chemical and Biological Engineering at FEUP–CEFT. The thesis aimed to study the possibility of using wastewater from dairy and winery industries (synthetic formulations) in an MFC and assess the influence of several operational and configurational parameters on the performance towards an improvement of power output and wastewater treatment efficiency. An 1D model accounting for coupled charge and mass transfer, biofilm formation and the electrochemical reactions that occur in a single chamber MFC operated at batch mode was also developed. During a PosDoc fellowship (Laboratory of Separation and Reaction Engineering and Laboratory of Catalysis and Materials, LSRE-LCM at FEUP) the main interest was improving the performance of yeast-based MFCs by developing/testing different strategies to improve yeasts cells anchorage on anode electrode (e.g., electrode modification with amine-based compounds). Currently she is a junior researcher hired by the e.Biofilm – Creation of a group pf Excellence on Engineered Biofilms (Grant Agreement N. 101087568), funded by Horizon Europe Framework Programme | ERA Chairs. The project is focused on understanding the mechanisms of biofilm development to improve control strategies and develop new treatments for biofilm-related infections and industrial issues. Joana Vilas Boas is well-skilled in electrochemical techniques and proficient in several biofilm characterization techniques. Moreover, she was involved in organizing international/national conferences and summer schools and regularly participated in public-promoting activities. She is the first author of six out of seven articles published in peer-reviewed international journals (mostly Q1, H=5), including a review paper, four experimental studies, and one modelling study. Furthermore, she has three book chapters. She is a Review Editor on the Editorial Board of Microbiotechnology (specialty section of Frontiers in Microbiology, Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology and Frontiers in Environmental Science). She has provided scientific and technical guidance (mentoring/supervising) to 4 MSc students (within the Bioengineering and Environmental Engineering courses at FEUP), and she was actively involved in defining the experimental protocols of their dissertations.
