Nina Costa's academic trajectory combines product design expertise with sustainable innovation. She has a bachelor in product design (Universidade de Aveiro) and master in industrial design (University of Porto, Faculty of Engineering). Her MIT-Portugal PhD (2017) developed innovative approaches integrating Product-Service System design with Service Design methodologies, enhanced by research periods at Aalborg University and MIT. Her industry engagement includes leading co-creation workshops with over 30 stakeholders, developing smart PSS solutions with Laborial, and creating energy service frameworks with EDP Commercial, being part of the International Service Design Network. At UA/ID+, she actively developed research for the DesignOBS project, creating comprehensive databases about Portugal's Design Ecosystem, generating over 1,000 downloads and influencing design education across higher education institutions. She also participated in management activities of the project. Currently holding a CEEC junior grant at ID+, University of Aveiro, she focuses on advancing circular economy through design in Portuguese industry. She participated in PRR project Alliance/Oli Push, focused on design-led innovation for circular economy in large industries ; and BAFTHA, a project focused on better bridging biomechanical female brain modelling to health management practices in contact sports. Her research impact includes over 200 citations, publications in prestigious journals, and significant contributions to international conferences. She actively supervises PhD and master's students while serving on evaluation committees and reviewing for international journals.
