Nina Costa is a design researcher with a PhD in Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing (MIT Portugal Program, University of Porto), and a CEEC (2020 Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus, 3rd edition) grant holder at the Research Institute for Design, Media and Culture (ID+), University of Aveiro. Her work sits at the intersection of product-service design, circular economy, and health innovation, with a growing focus on regenerative systems, biodesign and inclusive digital technologies. Her MIT-Portugal PhD (2017) developed approaches for innovation, integrating Product-Service System design with Service Design methodologies, in collaboration with Aalborg University (NL) and The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) in which she undertook research periods. She holds a bachelor in product design and technologies (Universidade de Aveiro) and a master in industrial design (University of Porto, Faculty of Engineering). Currently, she is Chair of DESIGNAE COST Action (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) “Fostering Nature-Centred biodesign to Explore Regenerative Futures” (2025-29); PI of the FCT CEEC project “Fostering Circular Economy through Design in industry in Portugal” (2021-2027); and fieldwork coordinator of FCT BAFHTA project (2022-2025) “Biomechanics of Female Head Trauma”, working in collaboration with National Combat Sports Federations, which focuses on bridging biomechanical female brain modelling to brain health management practices. She was part of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Network SDIN – Service Design for Innovation, as a researcher (2018), being enrolled in the International Service Design Network since then. Her industry engagement included leading co-creation workshops stakeholders, developing smart PSS solutions with Laborial, Laboratory solutions manufacturing, and creating energy service frameworks with EDP energy. At UA/ID+, she was awarded a Research Contract in the Design Observatory project (2019-22), leading the fieldwork with 36 design schools to develop a distributed observation, visualization and representation approach about Design in the country, creating comprehensive databases, generating +1,000 downloads, infographic materials, Augmented Reality applications, Info-Objects, and influencing design education across higher education institutions in the field of Information Design at the intersection of physical and virtual worlds. She is a member of the PRR project Alliance/Oli Push, focused on design-led innovation for the circular economy in large industries. She focuses on advancing the circular economy and sustainability through design in Portuguese industry, cooperating in the development of multiple initiatives within ID+, including workshops (e.g. Blue Creativity) and exhibitions (e.g. Science Fair). Her research impact includes over 200 citations, publications in prestigious journals, including Design Studies and Multimodal Technology Interaction. She is also the co-author of the Design Observatory book, actively supervises PhD and master's students while serving on evaluation committees and reviewing for international journals. She is an external collaborator of INESC-TEC, Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores, Tecnologia e Ciência, Leading Research Center of Engineering Design in Portugal; and is part of the International Service Design Research network. Costa regularly teaches Information Design in the Creativity, Representation and Knowledge non-degree course at UA since 2020; and is very active in developing research networks in interdisciplinary projects. Since 2021, she applied to 11 research funds in areas such as design for sustainability and regeneration; digital and inclusive health, housing for the future, through FCT, COST Association, Horizon Europe, PRR, La Caixa Foundation and MAPFRE foundation, as PI, co/PI, or leading local coordinator, accumulating +3,5M€ in potential funding for her institution.
