Ana Paula Pires holds a PhD in History from NOVA University of Lisbon. She is an Assistant Professor at the University of the Azores. Pires was a post-doc at Stanford University (2016-2019) and from September to December 2019 a Remarque Fellow at the University of New York, where she is currently a Visiting Scholar. Her main area of research is the economic and social history of the First World War, particularly its impact in Portugal and in Africa. Author of A Grande Guerra no Parlamento (with Maria Fernanda Rollo) (Lisbon, Divisão de Edições da Assembleia da República, 2018), Portugal e a I Guerra Mundial. A República e a Economia de Guerra (Casal de Cambra, Caleidoscópio, 2011), and co-editor of The Global First World War (with María Inés Tato and Jan Schmidt, Routledge, 2020), Guerras del siglo XX. Experiencias y representaciones en perspectiva global, (with María Inés Tato and Luis Esteban Dalla Fontana, Rosario, Prohistoria, 2019) There come a time...Essays on the Great War in Africa (with Anne Samson and Dan Gilfoyle, London, TSL Publications, 2018). She has published several articles in international journals, and chapters in collective books. Pires is Section Editor for Portugal of 1914-1918 Online International Encyclopaedia of the First World War and member of several international research networks with affiliations in Columbia University, the University of Buenos Aires and the University of Seville.
