Isabelle Viana is a researcher at Department of Virology, IAM-Fiocruz, Brazil, and has a recognized expertise in the immunological and biophysical characterization of proteins from retroviruses and flaviviruses. The Department of Virology is housed at the Aggeu Magalhães Institute – IAM, which is a branch of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation – FIOCRUZ, a public institution committed to reduce social inequalities through research and strengthening the public health system. FIOCRUZ is a leader in the development of vaccines and diagnostic tests in Brazil and several of its technologies has been, not only broadly applied to the Brazilian population, as well as licensed by leading pharmaceutical companies worldwide. I. Viana's research is devoted to the development of novel vaccine strategies, diagnostic markers and disease surveillance tools. She has been applying a combination of computational technologies and high throughput immune assays using human samples to perform T and B cell epitope mapping and to characterize the humoral response induced by a pathogenic agent. Using this information, she explores patters correlated either with immunity or pathogenicity and design novel antigen formulations containing the selected epitopes, computationally engineered proteins, adjuvants and adequate delivery methods. I. Viana is a member of the ZIKAlliance Consortium, an initiative involving 52 institutions in Europe and Latin-America, funded by the European Union (EU H2020, 2016-2021) with the aim to monitor the spread of the Zika virus infection, to determine the natural history of the infection and the clinical spectrum of the disease, as well as to develop diagnostic and vaccine approaches to mitigate the infection spread. Within ZIKAlliance, I. Viana currently is the local coordinator of three clinical prospective cohorts, which include the recruitment and two years follow-up of Zika-infected women and their children, and the establishment of a clinical seroprevalence study of arboviruses in Recife. The latter is also partially funded by the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO). Additionally, I. Viana coordinates three research projects focused on the biophysical and immunological characterization of molecules funded by Fiocruz, CAPES and FAPESP. I. Viana has expertise in experimental methods in molecular biology, notably in protein production and high throughput immune assays, and knowledge in experimental methods in molecular biophysics, such as nuclear magnetic resonance, circular dichroism, surface plasmon resonance and micrsocafe thermophoresis. She also has good experience with immunology, particularly in humoral response profiling (by ELISA, ELIspot, Luminex and flow cytometry techniques), function, isolation and characterization of B-cells, in vitro production of antibodies and immunoassays development. She has been applying these skills to the engineering of HIV, HTLV, Dengue, Yellow Fever, Zika and Corona viruses vaccine and diagnostic antigens.
