Pedro Nuno da Costa Leão

Pedro Leão is ERA Chair Holder and Principal Investigator / Team Leader at CIIMAR, University of Porto. He obtained his PhD in 2010 (University of Porto) working on the chemical ecology of cyanobacteria, supervised by Vitor Vasconcelos. He carried out postdoctoral training at CIIMAR, a research center affiliated with the University of Porto and also at Scripps Oceanography - University of California, San Diego (w/ Bill Gerwick) and Harvard University (w/ Emily Balskus). In 2015 he became an FCT Investigator and in 2018, after receiving an ERC Starting Grant, he established his lab (Cyanobacterial Natural Products Team) at CIIMAR, focused on the discovery of new natural products and enzymes from cyanobacteria. Since 2020 he is a Principal Investigator and since 2021 Blue Biotechnology and Bioengineering ERA Chair in this same institution. He is also an Invited Auxiliary Professor at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto (since 2015) and Invited Professor at the University of La Rochelle (France) and Universidade Católica de Valencia San Vicente Martir (Spain). He is or has been a PI in 4 major research grants, including an ERC Starting Grant and an ERC Consolidator Grant. He also participates/has participated in over a dozen EU or national projects. Pedro Leão maintains active collaborations with groups in Europe, the USA and Brazil. He has published ca. 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including first or last authorships in PNAS, Angewandte Chemie, Nature Communications and Natural Product Reports and has delivered 3 invited, 1 plenary and 1 keynote lectures in international conferences. Pedro Leão is a co-inventor in 4 patents/patent submissions. He is or has been the main supervisor of 10 postdoctoral researchers, 7 PhD students (4 completed) and co-supervisor of 7 additional PhD students. Furthermore, he has supervised or co-supervised 16 completed MSc theses. He has guest edited two special issues in the journals Toxins and Marine Drugs. He acts as a regular reviewer for peer-reviewed journals including Angewandte Chemie, Journal of Natural Products, Environmental Science & Technology and Marine Drugs, to name a few, and has been a grant reviewer for national and international funding agencies.
