Maria Alexandra Soares Gomes Cardosos de Oliveira

I hold Ph.D. in Environmental and Applied Geology from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. I have a strong background in field geology, remote sensing, and geographical information systems, gained during the work developed in academia and in the private sector. During my under- and postgraduate studies, I have been particularly interested in measuring, quantifying, and modeling the spatial distribution of physical processes based on geological proxies. I studied both cobble-to-boulder deposits as well as sandy deposits related to the 1755 tsunami inundation in the lowlands of the southern Portuguese coastline. During my Ph.D., I focused on rocky coastline contexts and addressed coarse-clast deposits associated with extreme marine inundations, namely coastal boulder accumulations on top of low cliffs and rocky platforms. I tried to use the geological record to (1) differentiate storm from tsunami inundations; (2) extract wave parameters (height, length, and direction); (3) estimate the age of the events; (4) estimate return periods. Boulder deposition was dated by developing and applying a lichen growth model. In the past few years, I have continued working on lichenometry in several contexts, from coastal extreme marine deposits to glacial and periglacial landforms. In parallel, I have been focused on biophysical characterization using reflected radiation acquired both in the field and through aerial/space remote sensing, mainly using multispectral imaging and LiDAR. In addition, I have also been working on air pollution and its effects on ecosystems, namely on acidifying and eutrophying pollutants and ozone concentration, based on field measurements and air pollution modeling. Within this context, I have been providing scientific support to the Portuguese environmental agency in the implementation of Art. 9 of the NEC Directive (2016/2284). Recently I applied for and was granted a 6-year contract by the FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia) during the 5th Edition of the competitive Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus. Presently, I work as a Contract Researcher in the Plant Biology Department in the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, integrated in the Centre for Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Changes. I have co-supervised/tutored 10 master theses, 4 still ongoing, and 3 ongoing Ph.D. projects. As a result of my work in research since my undergraduate studies, I have co-authored 20 articles in journals, 3 book chapters, 6 pre-prints, and participated in 19 projects related to Earth and Environmental Sciences.
