Rosa Cristina S Fernandes

Rosa Fernandes is Investigator at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra (FMUC) and an integrated member of the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR), which integrates the Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB) consortium at the University of Coimbra. She is the co-coordinator of the Research Management Office at FMUC. R. Fernandes was a member of the Animal Welfare and Ethics Committee (ORBEA) of FMUC. R. Fernandes is a Biochemist with a Master´s in Vision Sciences (1995) and received her PhD (2005) in Biomedical Sciences from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra (FMUC), Portugal. Part of her PhD experimental work in the field of diabetic retinopathy was performed at the Department of Internal Medicine, Medical Center, University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, U.S.A.) and School of Life Sciences, University of Dundee (Dundee, Scotland). Her main research interests are to: 1) understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying retinal degenerative diseases, namely diabetic retinopathy (DR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), focusing on disruption of the blood-retinal barrier; 2) identify novel biomarkers in tears for the diagnosis and staging of DR and AMD, as well as monitoring responses to therapies or predicting outcomes in response to them; 3) to develop innovative therapeutic strategies for these two retinal diseases. In her studies, R. Fernandes resorts to different preclinical models of DR and AMD: in vitro (cell lines and primary cultures), ex vivo, and in vivo (mice and rats). She has also been using human biological samples (tear fluid) due to a collaboration with the Ophthalmology Service from the Coimbra University Hospital (CHUC, Coimbra, Portugal). R. Fernandes has attracted competitive funding from national and international agencies (8 as PI) and has been a team member in additional 24 grants. She co-authored 6 book chapters and 84 peer-reviewed publications. R. Fernandes delivered 29 presentations as a guest speaker and co-authored more than 250 communications (as oral and poster presentations) in scientific national and international meetings. She supervised 4 PhD Theses (+ 3 ongoing), 17 MSc Theses, and 8 research grantees. R. Fernandes has also been actively collaborating with Doctoral and Master courses at FMUC, and she has been on the jury of PhD and MSc Theses. She has received 30 awards/honors. Also, R. Fernandes has been actively participating in several science outreach activities for the target and the general public, namely European Researchers Night, and Brain Awareness Week.
