Graduated in Biology in 2001 by the University of Madeira. In this same year, as a PhD student, was integrated into the Department of Evolutionary Biology, Estonian Biocentre (collaborative project with Human Genetics Laboratory, University of Madeira). During the PhD was enrolled in mtDNA and Y chromosome phylogenetic studies of several human populations. In 2007 integrated the Human Genetics Group at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, in projects aimed at identifying the genetic underpins of complex diseases, namely Parkinson's disease proteomics and microRnomics, Behçet disease, and stroke genomics. In 2007 obtained her PhD in Cytogenetics and Molecular Biology by the University of Madeira. Since 2008 is an Assistant Professor at the Unit of Medical Sciences, University of Madeira, teaching Molecular Biology of the Cell and Human Genetics to 1st and 2nd year students of Master’s in Medicine, and collaborated in several curricular units of the 1st cycle in Biology and 2nd cycle in Applied Biology. The research collaboration with the Human Genetics Laboratory, University of Madeira, was extended to the fields of sporadic colon cancer and asthma genomics and, more recently, in 2018, to the study of Benin’s population genetics, this last in collaboration with the Centro de Biologia Molecular e Ambiental (CBMA), Universidade do Minho, and the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Huddersfield. Further research collaborations were established with: i) Genomed, Institute of Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon, for development and scientific supervision of the project GENORATION, concerning mtDNA and Y chromosome ancestry and genealogy tests (2008-2023); ii) Human Genetics Group, Institute of Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon, for studies on ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, peripheral arterial disease, deep vein thromboembolism (2008-2018); iii) Division de Genómica, Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables, S.A. (ITER), for the whole exome analysis of Hereditary Angioedema. Has assumed the co-supervision of one PhD in Medicine (FMUL) (2009-2014), one PhD in Biological Sciences (UMa) (2016-present), one Masters in Applied Biology (2023-present), two Masters in Applied Biochemistry (UMa) (2023-present), a Master in Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences (FCUL) (2006), and 4 short-term internships (ESTeSL, 2013), UTAD (2011). Was a member of the jury for 3 academic dissertations: Degree in Biology (2008, examiner), PhD in Biological Sciences (2015, member), and Masters in Applied Biochemistry (2016, examiner), and 9 institutional juries for recruitment of Research grants, Science and Technology. Is a guest member of the Editorial Board of ISRN (International Scholarly Research Network) and referee for the journals Molecular Genetics and Genomics, BMC Medical Genomics, ISRN Genetics, Journal of Comparative Biology and Human Genetics. Since 2008 has assumed several management positions at the University of Madeira, namely Vice-Director of the Human Genetics Laboratory (February 2016-present), Vice-president of the Faculty of Life Sciences (2014-2016; 2016-2018), Member of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Life Sciences (2009-present), Member of the Faculty of Life Sciences Assembly (2009-present), Coordinator of the Medical Sciences Unit, Life Sciences Competence Center (2010-2013), Member of the University Senate (2008-2009), and Member of the Scientific-Pedagogical Council of the Department of Health Sciences (2008-2009).
