João Nuno Silva, born in 1999 in Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal, has been a doctoral student in Civil Engineering, specializing in structures, at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) since 2022. His journey at FEUP started in 2017 and culminated in his graduation from Engineering Sciences with a Civil Engineering profile (2020). His pursuit of knowledge continued with a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from FEUP (2020-2022), where he specialized in structures and geotechnics. His dissertation, "Fatigue Evaluation Based on Various Damage Methods and Design Curves of a Railway Bridge", was conducted within the ambit of the IN2TRACK3 and FiberBridge projects, under the guidance of Prof. Rui Calçada and Dr. José Correia. This work showcased his expertise in fatigue, fracture mechanics, and probabilistic modeling through an assessment of railway bridge damage. Silva is a member of the professional organization Ordem dos Engenheiros and CONSTRUCT, an institute for R&D in structures and construction at FEUP. As a doctoral student, he expanded his research horizons through involvement in projects like Hyperloop-Verne, supported by FCT, and the PRR - SMARTWAGON project, focusing on cutting-edge transportation solutions. In 2023, Silva furthered his specialization through an ERASMUS Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) in Fatigue Lifetime Prediction and Fracture Analysis of Materials and Structures, which included both lectures and laboratory work, enriching his understanding and application of critical concepts in fatigue and fracture mechanics. His scholarly contributions include the article "Fatigue damage assessment on aging riveted metallic railway bridges: A literature review". Furthermore, Silva has actively participated in key international conferences such as the Spanish Fracture Congress GEF2023, the International Conference on Structural Integrity (ICSI) 2023, and the Poland National Conference on Fracture Mechanics (KKMP) 2023, sharing his findings and engaging with the global engineering community. He has also applied his knowledge to practical challenges, notably in a consulting project evaluating the impact of new subway vehicles on Porto Underground's infrastructure.
