With a background in Biological Engineering from FEUP (obtained in 2012, with a classification of 16), Ana Luísa Gonçalves (ALG) has soon realised the importance to search for effective solutions to address environmental challenges, such as CO2 capture and wastewater treatment. To pursue this research, in 2013, she was granted a PhD Scholarship (SFRH/BD/88799/2012) to start her studies on CO2 capture and nutrients uptake from wastewaters using microalgae. These studies were conducted at FEUP, and the developed work was awarded with the Cum Laude distinction. Before concluding the PhD, she worked for 9 months as Biomass Production Manager in a microalgal biomass production company (Buggypower, Madeira Island). From October 2017 to January 2019, she was granted with a post-doctoral fellowship at CITEVE, where she worked on different projects (National and European) and prepared 3 project proposals (2/3 accepted for funding). From January 2019 to September 2021, ALG integrated LEPABE as a Junior Researcher. During this period, she worked on the optimisation of microalgal production conditions in wastewaters and on biomass valorisation. ALG also started a research line on the use of microalgae to improve the sustainability of relevant industrial sectors, such as the textile and paper/pulp. With this project, ALG was recognised with the Medal of Honor L Oréal for Women in Science 2019. Currently, ALG is a Junior Researcher at CITEVE. Developing project management activities since September 2021, ALG is actively working on different R&D projects and on the search for funding opportunities in cross-cutting areas, such as circular economy, process sustainability and environmental engineering applied to the textile sector. Concerning R&D projects, ALG is/was the PI of 5 projects and Co-PI of 2 other projects. She is/was also a team member of 6 projects. Regarding established collaborations, ALG worked with researchers from Portugal (LSRE-LCM, CEB, REQUIMTE and CIQUP) and abroad. As international collaborations, she worked in LGPM (France) for 5 months and was awarded with an exchange scholarship (PAUILF 2016). ALG worked for 1 year with researchers from the Natural Products Lab, Leiden University (Netherlands) to study allelochemicals production by microalgae. She also collaborated for 1 year with researchers from KAUST (Saudi Arabia), developing kinetic models to describe microalgal growth in the presence of antibiotics. Also, for 1 year, she was involved in the co-supervision of an external PhD student from UFSC (Brazil). ALG was also an invited professor at RTU (Latvia), teaching Bioreactors to PhD students. She also collaborated with researchers from CHARUSAT (India) in the study of phycocyanins production by cyanobacteria. The international collaborations established so far have resulted in the publication of 7 papers and 3 presentations in international conferences. ALG is the author of 33 papers (15 as first author, 1 as single author, 4 as the corresponding author, 4 as senior/last author and 4 without PhD supervisors as co-authors) in international journals, with an accumulated 5-year impact factor of 160 and over 2600 citations (h-index=24), and 28 book chapters. Her work was discussed in over 20 international meetings and in 8 invited lectures (National and International). She edited 2 Books and is guest editor of 2 Special Issues (from Applied Sciences and Energies). ALG was the reviewer of more than 30 papers for international journals and is a member of the Reviewer Board of Applied Sciences and International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. ALG is/was supervisor/co-supervisor of 9 MSc and 2 PhD (ongoing) students.
