Leonardo Cotts

I am a wildlife morphologist, with a degree in Biological Sciences from Universidade Estácio de Sá - UNESA (2009), a Master's degree in Environmental Sciences and Conservation (2014) and a PhD in Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology (2020), with both degrees from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - UFRJ, Brazil (BR). I was a postdoctoral researcher at the State University of Rio de Janeiro - UERJ (BR) (2021 - 2022 and 2023 - 2024), at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, BR (2022 - 2023) and at the Lisbon University - ULisboa, Portugal (PT) (2023 - 2023). I am currently a research collaborator at the Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes - cE3c of the Faculty of Science of the ULisboa and at the Laboratory of Tetrapoda - Vertebrate Zoology of the UERJ. My research focuses on the study of living and fossil vertebrates, particularly mammals, covering the following areas: I) Comparative Morphology (Anatomy and Eidonomy); II) Paleozoology; III) Ecomorphology; IV) Animal Pathology; V) Wildlife Forensics. In the field of education, I have taught at both the basic and higher education levels, delivering various undergraduate courses in health and environmental disciplines, such as Biology, Biomedicine, Pharmacy, and Oceanography. I have experience using Traditional and Active learning methodologies (Flipped classroom; Team-, Game- and Problem-based learning). I frequently engage in scientific communication and dissemination, mainly promoting knowledge about the Morphology, Ecology, and Health of wild vertebrates. I have served as a reviewer for international indexed scientific journals and as a technical advisor for scientific communication magazines. I am currently leading research initiatives in Integrative Ecomorphology across the Iberian Peninsula and Brazil, with these investigations focus on assessing emerging intra- and interspecific variations within wild mammal populations and exploring their potential correlations with anthropogenic impacts on natural environments. In 2018, I was honored with the "James L. Patton Award" by the American Society of Mammalogists for my research exploring the relationship between ecomorphological and pathological variations in museum specimens of Neotropical mammals. I am a member of the Brazilian Society of Paleontology (BR), the Brazilian Society of Zoology (BR) and the American Society of Mammalogists (USA).
