Maria Helena Fernandes é licenciada em Farmácia pela Faculdade de Farmácia, U. Porto (1980), e obteve o grau de Doutor no Imperial College of Science and Technology, Universidade de Londres, UK (1986). Desde 1998, é professora catedrática na Faculdade de Medicina Dentária da U. Porto (FMDUP). É responsável pelas unidades curriculares de ¿Farmacologia e Terapêutica¿ do Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Dentária da FMDUP e de várias unidades curriculares do Curso de Doutoramento em Medicina Dentária da FMDUP. É coordenadora do ¿Laboratory for Bone Metabolism and Regeneration (www.bonelab.net), FMDUP. As áreas de investigação em curso focalizam-se no metabolismo e regeneração óssea, em situação fisiológica e na presença de patologia sistémica, utilizando modelos in vitro, ex vivo e in vivo. A citocompatibilidade/biocompatibilidade de biomateriais para aplicação no tecido ósseo constitui a linha de investigação mais dinâmica do laboratório e envolve uma rede de colaborações com instituições nacionais e internacionais. É co-autora de mais de 200 artigos científicos citados no SCI e com arbitragem científica, e orientou/co-orientou 24 teses de doutoramento e 24 teses de Mestrado. Foi Diretora do Curso de Doutoramento em Medicina Dentária da FMDUP de 2018 a 2023. É investigadora do LAQV/REQUIMTE (Laboratório Associado para a Química Verde/Rede de Química e Tecnologia) - Grupo de investigação: Materials for Sustainability and Wellbeing. É responsável pela área temática ¿Health and Wellbeing¿.
