André Amador holds a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from the NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA) with a final grade of 16/20. During this time, he undertook a short internship in enzyme kinetics at the Molecular Biophysics Lab (UCIBIO) under Prof. Alice Pereira, sparking a lasting interest in enzymatic biocatalysis. For his Bachelor's Dissertation (which he finished with a grade of 19/20), André joined the Macromolecular Crystallography Lab at UCIBIO-SMB, supervised by Prof. Maria João Romão. He worked on characterizing a bacterial arsenite oxidase aimed at biosensor development. His work encompassed heterologous expression, purification, enzyme kinetics, and preliminary crystallization for time-resolved serial synchrotron crystallography (TR-SSX). Following his Bachelor degree, André was awarded a Scientific Initiation Fellowship under the “Introduction to Research in Applied Biomolecular Sciences” program at UCIBIO. He continued his work in structural enzymology, refining X-ray crystallography data of a bacterial formate dehydrogenase and performed electrochemical and thermal assays with the bacterial arsenite oxidase for biosensor development. To further bridge fundamental research with biotechnological applications, André pursued a Master’s in Biotechnology at FCT NOVA, finishing with a final grade of 18/20 (Dissertation grade of 19/20). He was awarded a Research Fellowship at the Biological Chemistry @ FCT NOVA Lab, LAQV/REQUIMTE, under Dr. Luísa Maia, where he contributed to the “CO2 Free” project (PTDC/BTA-BTA/0935/2020). His research focused on the biochemical, kinetic, and bioinformatics-driven characterization of bacterial formate dehydrogenases capable of reducing CO2 to formate. This involved enzyme purification from homologous systems, mechanistic studies, and structure/molecular modeling. Currently, André is a Research Fellow at the Microbial & Enzyme Technology Lab (MOSTMICRO-ITQB NOVA), contributing to the “Biocat4Suschem” project (2022.02027.PTDC) under the supervision of Prof. Lígia O. Martins. His research centers on the study of lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs), enzymes that degrade recalcitrant biopolymers like cellulose and chitin. His role includes enzyme engineering, structure-function analysis, and kinetic assays aimed at enhancing enzyme specificity and stability for biomass valorization. In addition to his research experience, André is actively engaged in science communication and outreach. He has volunteered at events such as Expo FCT (2022 and 2024) and the European Researchers’ Night (2023), and was a member of the organizing committee for the 2024 Inorganic & Bioinorganic Chemistry Conference (IBiCC 2024) in Lisbon. He has co-authored multiple poster presentations, demonstrating both communication and team collaboration skills.
