Maria Miguel Castro graduated in Biochemistry from the University of Évora (2014), and completed an MSc degree in Biochemistry (2016) from the University of Porto/ Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS). She participated in a curricular internship at the Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology University of Coimbra /Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra integrated into the project "Molecular mechanisms involved in the prevention of inflammatory processes in the gastrointestinal epithelium through a diet rich in polyphenols". On the first year of my MSc degree, she participated in an extracurricular internship integrated in the project: Influence of glycation in iron-binding to blood plasma proteins. Her MSc dissertation was performed at UCBIO, REQUIMTE in the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto, entitled: Determination of macrophage activation profile and T cell populations in the context of congenital toxoplasmosis. MM Castro was a research fellow in two projects at the CEBAL bioactive compounds research group between 2017 and 2019. During these two years, she also had the opportunity to co-supervise several students. Between 2019 and 2020, she was part of Des. solve team at NOVA school of Science and Technology, where she worked with the in vitro assessment of cytotoxicity and antiproliferative effects of therapeutic deep eutectic solvents (THEDES). Maria is part of Cancer Metastasis group at i3S (Porto), and she is doing PhD in Biomedicine at FMUP. MMCastro has published 6 papers in a peer-reviewed international journal (one as author). Her research interests include triple-negative breast cancer, inflammatory breast cancer, cancer metastasis, cell-cell adhesion, cancer stem cells, cancer epigenetics, and oxidative stress.

Every year, volunteer students are nominated and advocate for PhD students in academic and administrative matters. The representatives organize and present the issues and topics PhD students wish to discuss with the Board of Directors and other administrative units of i3S.
