I am a marine biogeoscientist and micropaleontologist with expertise in coccolithophore (calcifying phytoplankton) signatures from water column and sediments in marginal to open-ocean environments, and its application as a tool to unravel modern and past environmental variability. I investigate the role of individual and/or combined oceanographic and atmospheric processes on marine primary productivity and species composition (focus on coccolithophores) and quantify their effects on the marine carbon cycling in the context of ongoing climate change. I use a multiparametric approach across timescales, combining data from the seawater column (“snapshot”), particle export fluxes (seasonal/interannual), and seafloor sediments (long-term cumulative productivity), which I integrate with physico-chemical/bio-optical parameters, Earth Observations, and insights from microcosm experiments. The latter include initiatives aimed at exploring the ecological and biogeochemical impacts of CDR approaches (e.g., Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement). I also contribute to calibrate satellite algorithms aimed at monitoring the surface of the ocean (e.g., ESA projects BICEP and PRIMUS). I obtained my PhD degree in Geology (specialization in Paleontology and Stratigraphy) at the University of Lisbon (Portugal), followed by a MSCA-COFOUND at the University of Bremen (Germany) in 2015, and an European MSCA to lead project H2020-DUSTCO at FCiências-ID/MARE-ULisboa, in 2018. Both MSCA grants were aimed at studying particle-flux material (including coccoliths) collected from a basin-scale transatlantic transect crossing the entire tropical North Atlantic, right underneath the largest Saharan dust plume, to explore the impacts of dust in the marine environment. Since 2020, I am leading FCT-CEECIND project CHASE at MARE-Ulisboa/ARNET and Ciências Ulisboa, to study meridional changes in coccolithophore communities across the entire Atlantic and Southern Ocean, in collaboration IDL, PML, UEA, NIOZ, and FURG. In parallel, I am national PI of OAEPIIP, funded by the Sea to Carbon Initiative; member of NIOZ-UU Med-Trap and PROPOLAR FCT PHYTO-SHIFT; invited member of the WP Carbonate Pump within JETZON; and external collaborator at EU Horizon Ocean ICU, led by IOCAG-ULPGC. Until recently I was WP and Science Case Leader of ESA project PRIMUS (2021–2024). I have both lead and participate in multiple shipboard activities during 12 multidisciplinary marine expeditions, national and international, including one transatlantic (DUSTTRAFFIC JC134, 2016) and another Antarctic (37th OPERANTAR, 2019). I was recently invited to be part of the forthcoming Ocean ICU expedition onboard RV Sarmiento de Gamboa, in March-April 2025, sailing from Walvis Bay (Namibian) to the Canary Islands, to investigate all components affecting the ocean carbon pumps, and the impacts of different dust sources as fertilizers of primary production (Saharan vs. Namibian deserts). I am also founding national representative for SOLAS (Surface Ocean – Lower Atmosphere Study), Co-coordinator of the Discovery Science Plan for SOLAS 3.0 (2025–2035) soon to be submitted to SCOR (Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research), and member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation INA (International Nannoplankton Association).
