Rita Patarrão

Rita Patarrão (R Patarrão). I¿m graduated in Biochemistry from the Faculty of Sciences at Universidade de Lisboa and completed my PhD in Life Sciences at NOVA Medical School. I¿m Assistant Professor at NOVA Medical School, where I¿m lecturing Nutrition Biochemistry and Molecular Mechanisms of Disease subjects to medical students. I¿m also lectured for the MSc in Biomedical Research, MSc in Nutrition and for the Interuniversity PhD in Biomedicine. I specialize in the fields of Diabetes, Obesity, Hepatic Steatosis and Metabolism, and have been actively engaged in research in these areas since 1999. I¿m actively participated in 12 research projects funded by national and international funds, mostly related to diabetes and hepatic steatosis. Throughout my academic career, I have actively participated in both national and international scientific conferences, and I have authored over 22 original publications, 2 of them on last year about genetic impact on (pre)diabetes onset (Patarrão Metabolism 2021; Patarrão Diabetologia 2022). I have experience across various models, ranging from cellular systems to genetically modified mouse and rat models, and encompasses the handling of human samples as well. In addition, I was engaged in numerous advanced training courses aimed at enhancing my skills, including FELASA B training, EASD Training Course, Fit4Funding sessions, as well as courses in data science and machine learning. I also participated in open days and activities in schools. I am proud to have the chance to mentor Master's, medschool and highschool students, playing a role in shaping the future generation of scientific thinkers. I was also jury and arguer of PhD and MSc thesis defense. Being a visiting research fellow at a University of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada during my PhD research from 2001 to 2008 was an immensely transformative experience, significantly impacting both my academic and personal journey. I remain dedicated in my devotion to furthering the comprehension of pathophysiological mechanisms in metabolic disorders. I am committed to making significant contributions that enhance the well-being of individuals handling with metabolic disorders in Portugal. I¿m dedicated to continuously enhancing both my experimental aptitude and my broader skill set, including management and leadership capabilities, in pursuit of my objectives.
