Miguel Carmo is a PhD researcher at the Institute of Contemporary History, NOVA FCSH, since 2020. His work has been focused on agriculture, forestry and food production between the early modern period and the 20th century at a crossroads between agricultural change, environmental history, and history of science. He has undergraduate studies in Environmental Engineering and an MSc degree in Landscape Ecology where he researched the ecological patterns of wildfire spread in northern Portugal. He also worked in Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau (2009-2013). Recently, he has been working in multidisciplinary teams on the history of wildfires and rural uses of fire, rice cultivation and knowledge in the modern Atlantic, the wheat cycle in Portugal during the 20th century in relation to soil degradation and the emergence of soil sciences, and the changing meteorology of fire over the last four decades. Since January 2022 he is Principal Investigator in the FIREUSES project.
