Hélio Barros is from Cape Verde and obtained his degree in Applied Chemistry from Nova University of Lisbon, Portugal, in 2012. After successfully completing his degree, he was awarded an academic merit prize with an international exchange grant financed by the Luso-Brazilian Santander Totta Program, which enabled him to study in Brazil. He finished his Master in Chemistry in 2015 and PhD in Materials Science in 2019 with distinction from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. His PhD entitled Development and Application of Dyes and New Fluorescent Microstructured Materials for Latent Fingerprints Detection and Clinical Diagnosis was unanimously nominated for the National Capes Award - Best Thesis 2019 in the materials category. During his PhD, Barros completed an internship at the Scientific Police Laboratory in Toxicology and Judiciary Identification Sectors. He conducted postdoctoral research at the National Laboratory of Energy and Geology (LNEG, Portugal) for 18 months (2019-2021) in the Renewable Energies Unity and postdoctoral research at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon for 12 months (2021-2022). During his research career, he has been exposed to several research fields and worked on various projects in Portugal, Cape Verde, and Brazil. His research has resulted in 17 published peer-reviewed papers (11 of them as the first author), 2 patents (one granted and one filed) in the sustainable energy and forensic field, and various participation in national and international scientific conferences. His work is application focused, with factors such as cost-effectiveness, speed of readout, and environmental considerations at the forefront. It should be noted that this is not always conducive to high numbers of academic citations when compared with other fields. Despide this, his works have received several citations. He has published in high-impact journals with an average impact factor of 4.80 (with the highest IF of 11.50). He was the recipient of two research grants from the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development- CNPq (190429/2012-7 and 153914/2016-5) and is involved in many other projects in Portugal as a postdoctoral researcher, such as IDEAS - Novel building Integration Designs for increased Efficiencies in Advanced climatically tunable renewable energy Systems, funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 (grant 815271, 4 million EUR), DRUG DISCOVERY FOR p53 PPI-TARGETS (PTDC/QUI-QOR/29664/2017, 234000 EUR) and URE-LOCKERS - Urease next-generation inhibition therapy (PTDC/MED-QUI/3542/2020, 243000 EUR) funded by FC&T Portugal. He has experience managing funded projects and has collaborated with researchers from Tunisia, Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Colombia, and Ireland. He has contributed with teaching activities, two face-to-face undergraduate courses at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and one online master course at the University of Cape Verde. He was involved in the supervision activities of 6 undergraduate and master students. He is a reviewer of scientific journals, such as ELSEVIER's Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology A and Forensic Chemistry journal, MDPI's Materials and Crystal journal, and Springer's Analytical Science journal. Currently, he works as a junior researcher at Instituto Superior Técnico in the Sustainable Nanochemistry group, developing new biomaterials for biomedical applications.
