PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computers (Interaction Design), 1997, Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, Portugal. I started my academic career in 1981 at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto. I am currently Full Professor in Design at the Department of Communication and Art of the University of Aveiro (UA). As a co-founder of the UA Design area since 1995, I have participated in all the related curricular developments, and coordinated nearly all the Design degrees offered by the UA in that field of knowledge, at least in their first editions. I am one of the founders and the Director (since 2009) of ID+ (Research Institute for Design, Media and Culture) a research unit hosted by the Universities of Aveiro, of Porto, and more recently (2017) by the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave, associating 197 researchers, 78 of whom are PhD integrated members. Since 1997, I supervised 14 PhD theses and 34 Master dissertations. I am currently overseeing five research projects (one of which funded by the FCT), leading to a PhD in Design. I had also integrated 33 PhD examination teams (ten as the main examiner) and participated in 93 Masters¿ examinations (37 as the main examiner). Since 1987, I published 161 academic works: 27 international book chapters or papers in peer-reviewed journals, 66 publications in international peer-reviewed conference proceedings, 42 national book chapters or papers in peer-reviewed journals, and 26 publications in national peer-reviewed conference proceedings. I have edited eight books and I am a frequent collaborator for design and design research dissemination initiatives, either through interviews, opinion articles (24) or as a guest and keynote speaker (39) on the referred topics. I have participated (until 2017) in the Portuguese Evaluation panel for PhD grants in Design, Architecture and Urbanism and integrates a Commission for the assessment and accreditation of Portuguese degrees in the field of Design. I am an invited member of the Centre of Studies, Theory, Research and Design Culture at the University of Estado de Minas Gerais (Brazil), and of both the Editorial Advisory Board of The Design Journal and of I+Diseño magazine (University of Malaga, Spain). Since 2018 I am the principal investigator of project ¿Design OBS ¿ Towards a Portuguese Design Observatory: Models, Instruments, Representation and Strategies¿ (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-032445). Between 2012 and 2015 I was the principal investigator of project ¿CIDES.PT ¿ Centre for the Interpretation of Portuguese Design¿ (PTDC/CPC-DES/4754/2012). A project whose role was to investigate an extensive heritage of Portuguese artefacts which are scattered throughout the country and at risk of disappearing into oblivion. Principal researcher of the Strategic Projects (UI 4057 - 2011-2012-2013-2014) that funded ID+ during the period of 2011 through 2014, and of Recovery Plan 2016/2017. Between 2010 and 2015, I participated in the ¿Art on Chairs¿ project (EU Award ¿ RegioStars 2014 ¿ Smart Growth), organized by Paredes town hall. Commissioner of the ¿Art on Chairs ¿ International Design Competition¿ (2011/2012). In 2014/2015, within ¿Art on Chairs¿ second edition, commissioner and curator of the exhibitions Desfrutar o Tejo (urban furniture design), in Lisbon, and The experience of being (with Francisco Providência) in Beijing and Paredes. Supervisor of Designing Out Stigma (2008-2009), a research project focused on understanding the stigma associated with products for people with physical disabilities. Between 2004 and 2008, I was the head of the University of Aveiro research team in the European project INSCAPE ¿ Interactive Storytelling for Creative People (IP EU RTD contract IST-2004-004150). This project aggregated partners of various Universities and European Research Centers.
