Throughout my scientific career I investigated whether adaptation to new environments is constrained by previous evolutionary history or if it may constraint potential for adaptation to other environments. Recently my aim is to quantify the impact of ecological dynamics and of interspecific interactions on adaptation to new environments. I did my PhD (2010-2015) with Margarida Matos (cE3c, FCUL) and Mauro Santos (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) and studied the real-time evolutionary trajectory of Drosophila subobscura populations from contrasting locations, during their adaptation to a common environment. I demonstrated that historical differentiation leaves a genomic and karyotypic footprint, that is not erased by selection. However, this signature is completely erased at the phenotypic level, illustrating the importance of using an integrative approach when studying evolution. After my PhD, from January 2016 until April 2019, I was a postdoc in Claudia Bank¿s lab, focusing on statistical and mathematical modelling and data analyses. Namely, I investigated 1) the effects of synonymous mutations on adaptive path accessibility; 2) the distribution of fitness effects of new mutations under different environmental conditions and gene expression levels (in collaboration with Dan Bolon, UMass); and 3) the predictability and repeatability of evolution during adaptation to the laboratory environment. From May 2019 to July 2020, I was a postdoc in Sara Magalhães' lab, investigating the impact of coevolution on herbivore coexistence. I worked with real-time evolution of spider mites (economically important pests) on tomato plants, in presence of cadmium. In August 2020 I started a Junior Researcher contract at FCUL/cE3c (FCT CEEC-IND 2018) to disentangle the impact of interspecific interactions and pollution on the phenotypic and genomic changes during adaptation. In 2021, I was awarded a L'Oréal Medal of Honor for Women in Science that will allow me to further explore the evolutionary and ecological consequences of spider-mite adaptation to cadmium and address how it affects the spider mite's potential to respond to other stresses. In 2022, I was awarded an ERC starting grant to to study real-time evolution of tri-trophic systems and their interactions and how these eco-evolutionary feedbacks affect ecosystem resilience. In September 2023 I became Assistant Professor at Ciências (FCUL). I teach subjects related with experimental design, statistical analyses and evolutionary ecology at both bachelor, MSc and PhD and postdoc (cE3c advanced courses) levels. Until now, I have published 30 peer-reviewed publications in journals such as TREE, MBE, eLife and Evolution. I contribute to the general scientific community as a reviewer for more than 25 journals (including Evolution, Molecular Ecology, Evolutionary Applications, JEB, etc) and for international grant schemes. I am a council member of the European Evolution society (ESEB), member of the direction of the Portuguese Evolution society (APBE) and I am member of the Managing Board of PCI Evolutionary Biology. I am currently supervising/co-supervising 1 PhD and 2 Master student and have supervised/co-supervised 3 Master students. I actively disseminate my work and knowledge by 1) teaching courses on reproducibility in science, introduction and advanced R programming; 2) presenting oral and poster communications in several international and national congresses; 3) organizing conferences and symposia; and 4) being guest-editor in two special issues. I interrupted my scientific activity between November of 2018 and February 2019 for maternity leave
