Cátia Andreia Rodrigues Vieira completed her PhD in Biomedical Sciences in 2016, from the University of Porto (ICBAS), a Master's Degree in Biochemical Technology in Health in 2011 from the Instituto Politécnico do Porto (Escola Superior em Saúde), and a Degree in Biology in 2005, from the Universidade da Madeira. Until now, she has published eight articles in specialised scientific journals. Her doctoral project entitled ¿Purinergic mechanisms as potential pharmacological targets for the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases¿ was developed in the field of Pharmacology and Neurobiology. In the context of this project, animal models with induced ileitis were generated by intraluminal instillation of TNBS in the rat and they were used for experimental purposes 7 days after induction. All experiments were performed on longitudinal muscle-myenteric plexus preparations of these animals. In this animal model, the hypothesis were that the inflammatory reaction induced changes in the density of the resident cell population (in addition to the infiltration by inflammatory cells), capable of generating an imbalance in the release of purines and, consequently, in the release of ACh - the most relevant neurotransmitter in the control of intestinal motility. Before PhD, during her path, she had also an international internship experience in Switzerland. During six months she was working in an enterprise, CEMEX in the chemistry laboratory. Immediately after her PhD project, she joined as a postdoctoral fellow a project developed in the area of Epithelial Polarity and Cell Division, entitled ¿Spatiotemporal control of epithelial architecture during cell division¿. This work was developed in the Epithelial Polarity and Cell Division group of the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S). In this project, Drosophila Melanogaster was used as a model the aim focused to understand the role of alpha-catenin, which functions as a binding protein between the cadherins (adherent junctions) and the microfilaments of the actin cytoskeleton. During 1 year, she was a contracted Researcher in the project "BONEPURI (NO) AGEING - Regeneration of the aging human bone by purinome-activated mesenchymal stem cells - pre-clinical studies", at ICBAS-UP. In this project, the hypothesis raised is if the selective manipulation of the purinergic cascade in vitro, through the use of drugs, antibodies and shRNAs, can restore the osteogenic potential of aged mesenchymal stem cells. Currently, she is a technician with PhD degree working at the Pharmacology and Neurobiology group of MedInUP/ ICBAS-UP, focused on the role of purines in post-inflammatory ileitis.
