I have received a BSc in Biology in 2007 from the University of Coimbra, Portugal. In 2009 received a MSc in Biotechnology Engineering from the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), Spain. In late 2009 I was awarded a PhD Fellowship from FCT and obtained a doctoral degree in Endocrinology in 2015 from the USC. My PhD work was developed at the Dr López NeurObesity lab, where I explored the central networks behind the action of BMP8B, and its effects on brown adipose tissue aiming at finding potential new drug targets to combat obesity. In that period I worked on several international collaborative projects with researchers from the universities of Cambridge (United Kingdom), Barcelona (Spain) and Bergen (Norway), being the main responsible for the work studying the neuronal mechanisms of action of several hormones and drugs and their effects on brown adipose tissue and whole-body energy homeostasis. Moreover, my PhD dissertation was awarded with cum laude honour and a prize to the best thesis in health sciences in the 2014/2015 term from the USC. As a postdoctoral researcher I obtained a Postdoctoral Training Scientist position (2015-2019) funded by the UK Medical Research Council to work with Prof. David Carling at the MRC-LMS/Imperial College London. There, I developed new adipose tissue-specific genetic mouse lines to study the effect of activation of the energy sensor AMPK in vivo. I was also responsible for the lab implementation of primary adipocyte culture protocols and the Oroboros respirometry technology to study adipose tissue metabolism. Moreover, I contributed to the mentoring activities of MSc and PhD students. In 2019 I joined 3B’s Research Group at the University of Minho, Portugal, first with a Postdoctoral fellowship supported by the ERC Consolidator Grant ECM_INK and now with a Junior Researcher position. In the recent years, my main research topic has been the understanding of brown and white adipose tissue homeostasis, to uncover drug targets for the treatment of obesity. Currently, my research interests include the use of primary Human Derived Adipose Stem Cells (ASC) for the development of in vitro models as tools for adipocyte biology studies and drug test and screening. I am currently supervising a PhD student working on this topic. As result from my research, I have authored 12 research articles, 5 as first author (in top journals such as Cell, Cell Reports and Diabetes), 2 book chapters, 1 as first and corresponding author. I have presented 2 oral communications and 3 posters (12 in total) in international conferences. My h-index is 11 and I have 1194 citations (WoS data). I have taught as invited speaker at the Appetite Control module of the doctoral program in Metabolism, Clinic and Experimentation from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto. I was a member of the review board of PLoS ONE and I am now part of the review board of the Journal of Tissue of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. Additionally, I have mentored MSc and PhD students at USC and MRC-LMS/Imperial College, and I am currently mentoring 2 PhD students and co-supervising 1 PhD student at 3B’s Research Group. I am currently manager of the Electrophoresis and Western Blot laboratory and team contact point for proteomics analysis at 3B’s. I have participated and contributed significantly for the execution of 2 ERC grants, 1 Starting Grant – ObERStress and 1 Consolidator Grant – ECM_INK, and in an international project between the MRC-LMS and the pharma company AstraZeneca as part of their program to develop AMPK small molecule activators. I have participated in the organization of the MRC/LMS 2015 Postdoc Retreat. I have applied for WHRI academy and to Marie Sklodowska-Curie IF fellowship for postdoctoral funding, and for my PhD I was awarded funding through a 4-year fellowship from FCT, Portugal. Additionally, I was awarded several scholarships to participate in international conferences.
