Beatriz Moura completed her master's degree in Bioengineering in November 2020, from the University of Porto - Faculty of Engineering and Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar. During her master's degree, she did a volunteer internship at the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S) in order to become familiar with laboratory techniques that included various cell cultures. Under the Erasmus+ program, she did a 5-month internship in the Development of the Spinal Cord Organization group, at the Paris Seine Institute of Biology, whose main functions focused on the isolation, processing and immunohistochemistry analysis of spinal cord samples from mice embryos. Her master's thesis project, entitled "The Key Role of Periostin in the Bone Metastatic Niche and Sensory Neuron Crosstalk", focused on the development of a microfluidic platform for the study of the bone-sensory nervous system interaction in metastasis processes. The work was performed in the Neuro & Skeletal Circuits Group (Institute of Research and Innovation in Health) and the main tasks included the optimization of the culture of several cell types (osteoblasts, osteoclasts, neuronal and cancer cells) in microfluidic devices and subsequent immunofluorescence analysis. The master thesis project allowed her to gain extensive knowledge in different types of cell culture, including culture in 3D with Matrigel, coculture of both cell lines and primary cells and organotipic cultures. Furthermore, this project allowed her to acquire important skills in light and fluorescence microscopy, as well as important theoretical knowledge and practical skills on the use of microfluidcs as platforms for disease modeling. Currently, she is focusing her research on living materials, through the use of cell surface modification with metabolic glycoengineering, gaining important knowledge on said fields.
