He is also a Senior Researcher at the Research Centre for Anthropology and Health (CIAS), University of Coimbra, where he coordinates the Research Group 'Technoscience, Society and Environment'. Before moving to Coimbra in 2020, he held positions at the London School of Economics and Political Science, the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, and the University of Hong Kong. He is the author of Chinese Village Life Today (Univ of Washington Press, 2021) and the co-editor of Transforming Patriarchy (Univ of Washington Press 2017). His work explores new approaches to social transformations in contemporary China, showing the limitations of technocratic visions of development and highlighting the need to give voice to the perspectives of ordinary citizens and local communities. His research is strongly committed to questions of social and environmental justice, insisting on the need to foreground issues of inequality when thinking about the challenges of the Anthropocene and the current planetary conjuncture of environmental crisis . He is the founding director of the International Research Network Sci-Tech Asia and is a member of the Research Croup "Chinese Culture and Society" of the Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues at Georgetown University.
