Raul Valente (RV) is a PosDoc researcher at Interdisciplinary Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research of the University of Porto, Portugal (CIIMAR.UP). RV has BSc degree in Biology, followed by a MSc in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution, and a PhD in Biology, completed in Jan 2024. He was awarded a PhD Studentship in an international competitive FCT Call (SFRH/BD/144786/2019). Currently, RV is employed by the EMPHATIC Project (Biodiversa+) where he has been responsible for establishing a standardised protocol for microbiome analyses from blow samples of free-ranging cetaceans. Additionally, he serves as the EMPHATIC Project manager, actively contributing to the overall progress of the project. He benefitted from several international experiences by doing an internship at Aquatic Mammal and Bioindicator Laboratory (MAQUA), Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) and at CIMA Research Foundation (Italy). He has conducted research in the field of marine ecology since 2016, focusing on cetacean ecology and evolution. RV has supervised graduation and now MSc students. He has a strong experience in fieldwork activities, organising, coordinating, tutoring interns, and participating in several at-sea campaigns to conduct activities of cetacean monitoring and sampling, applying several techniques. He is licensed by the Portuguese Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) to sample cetaceans. His scientific activities have been dedicated to the use of monitoring tools to improve cetacean conservation and investigate how molecular and environmental factors influence the unique traits found in cetaceans, with a strong publication record on the topics. Therefore, he has developed relevant skills in population and comparative genomics and ecological modeling. He is also involved in studies of photo-ID, ecotoxicology, bioacoustics, and eDNA techniques. RV has participated in 8 research projects (all funded in national & international calls) in which he actively contributed by performing research, discussing ideas, writing manuscripts, supervising, and mentoring students. RV has significantly contributed towards the securing of funding by collaborating as a research team member in several national and European projects. During his career, RV delivered several communications in national and international meetings. To this date, RV has collaborated in co-authorship of scientific papers with over 50 researchers from more than 7 countries the size of his network and degree of internationalization is evident in his publication record. He has published 17 articles all in international peer-reviewed journals, the majority in the fields of Marine Biology, Evolutionary biology, and Environmental Sciences. MLM has an h-index=7 and > 98 citations (Web of Science). RV´s work has significantly contributed to the understanding of the unique Marine Mammals adaptations as well as use of monitoring techniques to assess cetacean occurrence and health.
