Sérgio Dias Graduated in Biology, from the Science Faculty of Lisbon University in 1994. In the last year of his undergraduate studies he had his first contact with translational research, at the Protozoology Unit of IHMT (Tropical Health and Medicine Institute, Lisbon). His 12 months internship, studying leishmaniosis in a dog model, allowed him to contact with immunology, in vivo models of disease and cell culture techniques. However, his fascination with cancer eventually led him to go abroad and study in London UK, at Imperial Cancer Research Fund (now called Cancer Research UK). Four years later Sérgio Dias obtained his PhD in ¿Tumor Immunology¿ from University College London, having developed his laboratory work in Fran Balkwill´s Lab, at Imperial Cancer Research Fund, (1995-1998). His studies on the action of IL-12 as a mediator of the host immune system and an angiogenesis inhibitor resulted in the publication of 3 papers in International, peer reviewed journals. Sérgio Dias did his post-doctoral training (3 years) at Cornell University Medical College in New York, USA (1999-2001) in Dr Shahin Rafii´s Laboratory. His post-doctoral studies focused on the importance of angiogenesis in the onset and progression of hematopoietic malignancies such as leukemias and on the contribution of bone marrow derived cells such as endothelial progenitors in tumor progression. This training allowed him to develop his main scientific interests: to understand cancer as a systemic disease, involving the host hematopoietic (and immune) and the vascular system. His post-doctoral studies resulted in the publication of 21 papers in high quality, high impact, peer reviewed Journals. After his post-doctoral training he returned to Lisbon, Portugal, where he established his independent laboratory, at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology (IPO-Lisbon). He was Auxiliary Investigator at IPO-Lisbon for 10 years, External Member of the Gulbenkian Institute and Directed the molecular Pathology Department of IPO-Lisbon for 8 Years. He was Invited Auxiliary Professor at Nova Medical School from 2009-2012. Sérgio Dias is currently Principal Investigator at Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (IMM-JLA) (since October 2013) and Invited Associate Professor of the Medical School of Lisbon University. He is also Co-Director of the IMM-CAML Biobank since 2014, and Coordinator of the National Biobank Infrastructure. He has taught undergraduate and post-graduate students for over 18 years. He has supervised 10 PhD Students, 11 post-doctoral researchers and 12 Master students. He has published 80 papers in peer reviewed International Journals and several book chapters. He currently has over 15000 citations, and an h index of 42. He is a member of International Medical Societies, and a reviewer for the main journals of his expertise. Research performed at his laboratory aims at unraveling the interactions between cancers and their hosts, such as the host systemic lipid metabolismo and metastasis formation.
