I am an experienced Biochemist, with a BsC in Biochemistry, MsC in Biochemistry and a PhD in Biosciences (Major in Biochemistry) by the University of Coimbra. Briefly, my scientific record is composed by 33 published papers in high impact journals (22 at Q1; 6 in Top 10% journals in the field; JCR Clarivate Analytics). I have 3 papers as first-author and a network of 128 co-authors, 426 citations and an h-index of 12 (SCOPUS) with an accumulated journal impact factor of 145.8. I was on the organizing committee of 3 national and international events and participated in several scientific events with (co)authored conference proceedings. I was also the recipient of a national FCT PhD individual fellowship and a prized young investigator award at an international conference. So far, I have collaborated in 28 research projects and supervised several students. Early on my BsC I was interested in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) applied to metabolism. During the MsC I performed a secondment at the Imperial College of London to learn multivariate analysis techniques applied to NMR datasets. The following year I enrolled my first project as a research fellow at the CNC, focusing mitochondrial bioenergetics, glycolysis and signalling pathways in cancer stem cells. Meanwhile, I initiated a PhD fellow in a collaboration project between CNC and MIT. The study aimed to quantify and interpret several catabolic and biosynthetic pathways, namely glycolysis, TCA cycle activity, glutaminolysis and de novo synthesis of fatty acids in lung cancer cell cultures through the use of 13C and 2H labelled substrates and NMR techniques. After finishing the PhD, I collaborated with different projects focusing metabolism and NMR tracers. One involved a collaboration with the University of Coimbra, CNC and as an invited researcher at the University of Heidelberg, focusing altered metabolism in inflammatory and autoimmune processes. I moved to CNC, and drifted my attention towards alternative and sustainable fish feed formulations for aquaculture. By providing 2H2O to aquaculture fish, we were able to quantify hepatic lipogenesis and gluconeogenesis, under different experimental diets. I kept my research in the aquaculture field, and started to research with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, also focusing hepatic metabolism and NMR tracers. Besides these projects, I have collaborated in several other works in different frameworks, from in vitro cell culture, to rat, mice, fish, birds, larvae, fruit fly, baboons and humans. Currently, I am a full-time Assistant Professor at EUVG (Dept of Veterinary Sciences) and part-time Invited Assistant Professor at IPL (Health School) and a research collaborator at CNC. I am also a Director of CIVG (Research Center), Co-coordinator of the BSc in Marine Health and Welfare and Coordinator of the Zebrafish Animal Facitilies. I have always been interested in metabolism and NMR and my research track has been centred in studying, interpreting and quantifying core metabolic pathways and allowed me develop an unusual theoretical and technical expertise in combined 13C and 2H tracers applied to metabolism in an elegant, robust and quantitative research, generating high value and quality data, with highly translational potential. I have more than a decade of expertise as a spectroscopist as researcher, and I am highly proficient in data processing and uni- and multivariate statistical analysis. I also have an excellent knowledge of English and extensive practice with several animal models. As a professor, I occupy relevant management positions and also supervise students, being actively involved in several outreach activities. I am strongly committed to continue my research in this field, hoping to generate better comprehension of metabolic fluxes, improving health and nutritional practices, and better resource management and sustainability, with tangible impact in the society.
