Madalena F. C. Silva is in the 1st year of her PhD in Chemistry with specialization in Medical Chemistry in the University of Coimbra, in collaboration with UFSP. She finished her bachelor's degree at the University of Coimbra in 2020, with an average classification of 14/20. During the exploratory studies of her BSc internship, she conducted work in the field of Organic and Medicinal Chemistry, namely in the synthesis and studies of antimicrobial activity of thiazolidine base compounds. Later in the same year, she started the MSc in Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Coimbra, concluding it in 2022 with an average classification of 18/20. These studies culminated in the public defence of the dissertation entitled "Development of Potential Antibacterial Agents through Sustainable Synthetic Strategies", in which I obtained a classification of 19 values. Madalena F. C. Silva was awarded with a scholarship from the program "FCT Verão com Ciência" (2020), during which she developed and gained new skills in organic synthesis, purification and characterization techniques (chromatographic and spectrometric techniques), as well as in flash photolysis and in vitro cell culture. During her studies and scientific activities, she acquired experience in in area of organic synthesis in batch and continuous flow conditions and characterization of organic compounds (Gas chromatography GC-MS, 1H RMN, 13C RMN and HRMS), photochemical and photophysical studies, including UV-Visible, fluorescence, singlet oxygen and photodegradation, as well as capacities in antibacterial assays, namely the diffusion disc method and antimicrobial photoinactivation. She participated as a co-author in the development of an invited article for "Catalysis Today" entitled "Catalytic Multi-Step Continuous-flow Processes for Scalable Transformation of Eugenol into Potential Fragrances" (2023). She also participated in the training course - Experimental Medicinal Chemistry: from the Academy to the Pharmaceutical Industry in 2020. A year later, she participated in "XI National Meeting on Catalysis and Porous Materials", with a poster presentation entitled "Continuous flow catalytic strategies for sustainable synthesis of fine chemicals". In 2022, she participated in the "XXVI Encontro Galego Português de Química", where she presented a poster as 1st author, entitled "Development of potential antibacterial agents through sustainable synthetic strategies" and was also the co-author of two other oral presentations. In 2023, she participated in the "18th International Photodynamic AssociationWorld Congress", where she presented another poster as 1st author, entitled "Structure-activity studies of di-cationic imidazolyl porphyrins for PDI of E. coli". In 2024, she participated in the "15th National Organic Chemistry Meeting & 8th National Medicinal Chemistry Meeting" were she presented an oral communication entitled "Synthesis of amphiphilic di-cationic imidazolyl porphyrins for photoinactivation of bacteria". Her current research interests include the study of natural based photosensitizers incorporated on biodegradable matrixes and their applications on decontamination of surfaces.
