I am a cancer immunologist with a strong focus on utilizing the human microbiome for the development of breakthrough cancer therapies. My primary research goal is to harness the human microbiome to develop novel live biotherapeutics aimed at treating, intercepting, and preventing cancer. Since March 2023, I have been leading the Microbiome in Health and Disease Translational Laboratory at GIMM, Portugal. Our lab combines cutting-edge techniques in metagenomics, metabolomics, and immunology to delve into the complex interactions between the microbiome and colorectal cancer, uncovering therapeutic potentials within this interplay. With a PhD in Health Sciences, I have demonstrated a deep commitment to impactful research. My track record includes 15 original articles (e.g. EMBO Mol Med, J Exp Med, Sci Transl Med), collectively cited over 3,500 times (Google Scholar), with multiple papers ranked in the Top 5% of research outputs (Altmetric). My academic journey began in the laboratory of Prof. Philippe Sansonetti at Institut Pasteur, Paris, where I focused on bacterial mechanisms that influence the immune system in chronic disease contexts. This work laid a foundation for my ongoing research into microbiome-immune interactions. In 2013, I expanded my expertise at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York, where I collaborated with Dr. Egeblad to investigate macrophage and cytotoxic T-cell interactions in tumors, developing innovative protocols for intravital imaging and flow cytometry to capture anti-tumor immune responses in real-time. Later, through a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship at APC Microbiome Ireland, Cork, I led a project examining how tumor-associated microbiota can alter immune functions and impact colorectal cancer outcomes. Today, as a Principal Investigator, my objective is to build a multidisciplinary research program aimed at understanding how specific bacterial metabolites can be leveraged as novel cancer therapeutics or therapeutic adjuvants. My expertise in metagenomics, faecal-microbiota transplants, and advanced cancer biology research techniques, combined with active collaborations, positions our lab at the forefront of this exciting field, pushing forward the boundaries of microbiome-based cancer therapies.
