Ângela Sousa obtained her degree in Biochemistry in 2007 from the University of Beira Interior (UBI), Portugal. In 2008 she was awarded an FCT PhD grant and spent 3 month-stay (2009) in the Department of Pure and Applied Biochemistry at Lund University, Sweden, to explore innovative chromatographic columns developed by GE Healthcare company. In 2011, she had a 1 month-stay in BIA Separations company, Slovenia, for chemistry immobilization of amino acid ligands in monolithic chromatographic supports, and in the end of that year, she received her PhD degree in Biochemistry from UBI (Portugal). In 2012 and 2015 she was awarded with two postdoctoral grants at the Health Sciences Research Centre of UBI (CICS-UBI) in Portugal. From February 2017 to August 2018, she was Invited Assistant Professor in the Sciences Faculty of UBI. From September 2018 to March 2023, she was a contract as Researcher (DL-57) from CICS-UBI in Health Biotechnology area. In 2019, she got a Guest Researcher position and Visiting Professor at Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, UNESP. Since January 2022 she is Invited Assistant Professor in the Health Sciences Faculty of UBI and since March 2023 she holds a CEEC institutional position as Assistant Researcher at CICS-UBI. Her main research interests include the implementation of new biotechnological platforms to obtain and deliver biopharmaceuticals with potential applications in DNA vaccines or gene therapy approaches. From 2014, the Dr. Sousa's team was pioneer in the modification of monolithic chromatographic supports with amino acids and its derivative ligands to efficiently purify therapeutic nucleic acids (plasmids and minicircle DNA), by applying a single chromatographic step. Recently, she developed the first chromatographic analytical method for the assessment of minicircle DNA supercoiled isoform. She participates as PI, team member and collaborator in several financed research projects. She collaborates with several international institutions, namely The University of Texas at Austin, UNESP, IRCCS Regina Elena National Cancer Institute, CRBM, Montpellier University, Birla Institute of Technology & Science-Pilani, Hyderabad; international companies namely BIA Separations and SARTORIUS, and national institutions, namely UCIBIO-I4HB, iMed.ULisboa and CDRsp-IPL. During her scientific career, she has gained supervision experience of 39 trainees, 10 research grants, 46 Master students (6 ongoing) and 11 PhD students (10 ongoing, which the project "Mannosylated minicircle DNA nanovaccine against COVID-19" has been disseminated by TV show, radio web channels and magazines). She has also Jury and Referee experience of Graduation, Master and Doctoral thesis. Her scientific experience is summarized in the publication of 85 research articles (Hindex 20), showing her experience as independent researcher from the last 5 years in publications as corresponding author (26), work responsible/last author (23) and international collaborations (24). She also published 11 papers in conference proceedings, 7 book chapters (invited), 1 national patent (PT-106446; 110595), 4 publications of scientific work in Websites and participated in several national and international conferences (receiving 11 awards of best oral/poster presentations). In the last 5 years, she had 4 awarded projects (ex. UBI/Santander young researcher in 2023) and is PI of DryVac project (2023.00136.RESTART) from FCT. She was Member of Scientific and Organizing Committees and Awards Committee of national/international conferences. She is a frequent referee of papers in international journals, member of the editorial boards of scientific journals, Guest and Associate Editor of 9 Special Issues, Editor of 3 Books, 4 eBooks, Evaluator of National Innovation Agency and member of International network of Prevention to One Health. Her outreach activities include being invited speaker at conferences, Cancer day, Science Week, journals, radio, TV interviews

2023/03/25 UBI, in partnership with Banco Santander, awarded Ângela Sousa, on the 8th of March, the Young Investigator Prize. The award-winning project is entitled "MIND: Multifunctional Innovative NanoDevice for lung cancer therapy" and proposes to study a new form of treatment for lung cancer, which avoids the use of chemotherapy and its negative effects, with other advantages such as cost reduction for the health system.
