I. Mafra graduated in Food Engineering from the Portuguese Catholic University, completed a Master degree in Biological Engineering from the University of Minho and concluded a PhD degree in Chemistry, branch biochemistry from the University of Aveiro. After a Post-doc research period in biochemistry of cell wall polysaccharides, in 2003, she moved to REQUIMTE as an Assistant Researcher, where she started and established her new line of research in molecular biology applied to food authentication and GMO detection. In 2008, she won a new position as Assistant Researcher at CBQF (Portuguese Catholic University) with main activities of exploiting antioxidant properties of foods and lecturing. In 2009, she returned to REQUIMTE, advancing her pre-established line of research as a group leader, expanding the area of food allergen research. Presently, she is a Principal Research awarded from FCT (2021.03670.CEECIND). She has contributed with remarkable scientific advances regarding the identification of the origin of foods (plant and animal), including medicinal plants, plant food supplements and a main focus on food allergens. She has strong expertise in the development of DNA-based methods, including DNA extraction from complex food matrices, PCR, real-time PCR, HRM analysis, sequencing, nanoplate digital PCR, among others. Recently, she has being exploiting novel foods (insects) as alternative protein and bioactive peptide sources. She has also expertise in the development of chromatographic (GC, HPLC) and spectroscopic methods (FTIR). She has strong participation in EU projects (OLITEXT - FAIR CT97 3053, GMOsensor - FP7 PEOPLE-2013-IRSES, FOODINTEGRITY - FP7-KBBE-2013), including COST actions (FA1101 - Saffronomics, FA1402 - ImpARAs, CA18111 - PlantEd, CA18227 - COMFA, CA22166 - SafeGameMeat and CA23127 - GIN-TONIC). She has also participated in several bilateral (FCT/Slovakia, Portuguese/Spanish Integrated Actions, FCT/Serbia and FCT/Morocco CNRST) and national projects, from which she ha coordinated the AlleRiskAssess - PTDC/BAA-AGR/31720/2017, the Healthy&ValorFOOD - NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000052 and the ongoing Hypoallergen - PTDC/BAA-AGR/4005/2021. She has a publication record with over 130 articles in international peer-review journals (H-index 41, over 4800 citations), 14 articles in national journals, 18 book chapters and 1 book edition, having more than 200 oral and poster presentations. She supervised several students, including Post-Doc (3), PhD (8), MSc (20) and undergraduate (10).
