Leonardo is a marine biologist (PhD) with an extensive research background in seaweed aquaculture, ecophysiology, and biotechnology, with an emphasis on the production of seaweed biomass for the commercialization of different products for various industries. He has published 39 internationally peer reviewed scientific publications, with 2000 citations. Leonardo has founded Gopsis, Lda, a CCMAR spin-off company to provide scientific consultancy and research services for the seaweed industry and for research project consortiums. Leonardo currently works as the chief scientist of Greener Grazing (www.greenergrazing .org), the leading company working on establishing large scale ocean-based cultivation of the red seaweed Asparagopsis.
