Dr Diogo Montalvão is Deputy Head of Department and Principal Academic in the Department of Design & Engineering. He is also an Editor for Heliyon, an open-access Elsevier journal. As a Mechanical Engineer, he has been developing his career both with industry and academia, being involved in several interdisciplinary research projects and having presented one chapter in a book and over sixty publications. Diogo started his career in the Rolling Stock industry at ADtranz and Bombardier Transportation. After completing his PhD (Structural Health Monitoring in Composite Structures), he was appointed a one-year Professorship in the MIT-Portugal Doctoral program in Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing. He supervised a KTP project on Balance of Plant of Hydrogen Fuel Cells (Euro-Energy Solutions) and participated in the qualifying tests of the windward assembly of the Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle (IXV) for SPS (Snecma Propulsion Solide, SAFRAN group) in a project led by TAS-I (Thales Alenia Space Italia). In a project for OGMA (Portuguese Aeronautic Industry), he was responsible for the vibration analysis and re-design of a structural modification on a C-130 aircraft. Diogo is an experienced user of CAD/CAE software, namely Solidworks, CATIA, LabVIEW and ANSYS. More recently, he concluded an Executive MBA at the Hertfordshire Business School (with Distinction). Diogo also acted as Student Rep, which got him involved with the (successful) programme accreditation by the AMBA. Finally, Diogo led the Programme Development Team for the new General Transition Masters in Engineering at the University of Hertfordshire, which was successfully validated and approved in July 2016. This broad range of experience contributed to the success in his roles, which achievements were already recognised with a number of awards.
